Girl Scouts in Trouble
Gene Lalor | June 28, 2013
FoxNews.com reported Monday that the Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA) is currently suffering through the worst set of challenges in its one hundred and one year history: “Its interconnected problems include declining membership and revenues, a dearth of volunteers, rifts between leadership and grassroots members, a pension plan with a $347 million deficit, and an uproar over efforts by many local councils to sell venerable summer camps.”
What first struck me about that news was the huge deficit in GSUSA “pension plan.” I had always thought the Girl Scouts’ organization consisted mostly of volunteers but I guess that’s not the case–at least not anymore, especially since it abandoned its mission as an apolitical advocate for American girls and had adopted the leftist Democrat Party’s “progressive” goals.
In fact, in all probability and as detailed here in “Two Spunky, Conservative Girl Scouts,” the GSUSA’s current issues with declining membership, revenues, and volunteers, its various rifts, its pension woes, and plans to peddle those summer camps to the highest bidders are closely related to that leftward lurch to the left which began two decades ago when “God” was dropped from their “Promise.”
The GSUSA leadership now focuses on propagandizing, and guiding innocent Scouts seeking sources of information to such extremist sources as George Soros’ Media Matters, to its own publication, MEdia, and to America’s premiere abortionist, Planned Parenthood.
In addition, the GSUSA promotes its own version of the military’s former “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in regard to sexual orientation which aligns it with the Supreme Court if not with the majority of its leadership and membership.
Along with a number of other girls, one of the abovementioned “spunky conservative girl scouts,” Sydney Volansky, left the organization after years of membership, repulsed by all that “progressivism” and abandonment of Scout tradition and principles as did Scout leaders who objected to the GSUSA admitting a transgendered, biological boy into their ranks.
Suellen Nelles, head of a local Scout council based in Fairbanks, Alaska firmly believes, “We have leadership at the top who are toxic to this organization and need to go” and the source of that toxicity seems to be emanating from new national CEO Anna Maria Chavez who just as firmly believes “girls aren’t living in the past–they’re living in the future.” No one disputes that contention. It’s the nature of Chavez’ vision of the Girl Scout’s future that is slowly destroying the GSUSA.
