2012 War on Christmas III: A Truce! Hallelujah!

Gene Lalor | December 8, 2012

(Parts I and II of this series, dealt with the Liberty Counsel’s 2012 listing of “naughty” and “nice” American retailers as determined by whether they made any effort to observe Christian American tradition at this time of year as they raked in their big bucks from Christmas shoppers.  Part III deals with a truce in the War on Christmas as staged by an unidentified group in a crowded Stamford, Connecticut cafeteria.)

Hallelujah.  Two years ago, a “flash mob,” groups usually associated with chaotic and sometimes violent “flash” demonstrations in public arenas, presented surprised shoppers in a crowded Stamford, Connecticut mall cafeteria with a totally different demonstration–a well-rehearsed and uplifting rendition of the “Hallelujah Chorus,” the second part of George Frederic Handel’s oratorio on Christian doctrine, Messiah.

The fact that Messiah is a deeply-religious, Christian work didn’t matter.

As reported here two Christmases ago, “It was hardly the usual venue, with bright Arby’s and McDonald’s and Subway signs in the background and in the midst of Christmas shopping when some Connecticut shoppers got the all-time treat of their shopping lives.

“Unannounced and on silent cue, some 300 highly-gifted performers in a so-called ‘Christmas Flashmob,’ some with fresh young faces, some with lined older faces, rose to their feet interrupting the usual holiday music fare being piped into a mall cafeteria in Stamford and delivered a spirited, beautiful rendition of Handel’s ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ that almost rivaled the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

“Handel’s words and music were inspiring but the real mall show, the real story, was in the delighted expressions of the unsuspecting audience munching their lunch who were not in the least upset over having their meal interrupted.  In fact, most seemed hugely entertained and visibly thrilled.

“Note, for example, the wide-eyed children awed at what they were witnessing, the respectful and smiling teenagers, the seated mother reaching for the hand of her young son who willingly took it, the older woman brushing aside a tear.”

Give yourself a Christmas treat!  See and enjoy the complete five minute video here: http://bit.ly/998mVT and give thanks that there are occasional truces in America’s seemingly endless War on Christmas.  For those who would like to sing along, the complete lyrics of the “Hallelujah Chorus” hymn follow:

Handel Messiah  “Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

“For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

“The kingdom of this world
Is become the kingdom of our Lord,
And of His Christ, and of His Christ;
And He shall reign for ever and ever,
For ever and ever, forever and ever,

“King of kings, and Lord of lords,
King of kings, and Lord of lords,
And Lord of lords,
And He shall reign,
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings, forever and ever,
And Lord of lords,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

“And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
And He shall reign forever and ever,
King of kings! and Lord of lords!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!”

Merry Christmas!
