Marine Corps Poetry: My Ol’ Mess Kit

Carl | August 14, 2012

My mess kit ’twas dear to me,
I would not with it part.
I’d fill it almost to the brim,
Before I’d even start.

I carried it thru shot and shell,
It always served me very well.
I kept it neat and shiny clean,
The efforts of a good Marine.

They’d slop on mashed potatoes,
And cover ‘em with gravy.
And tons of greasy beans
Supplied by the Navy.

I didn’t mind most
Of what they gave;
I was a hungry fool.
But when it came to
Brussels sprouts,
They were agin my rules.

I carried it o’er beaches,
And thru the salty brine.
I never once deserted
That good ol’ friend of mine.

The last I saw of my good friend,
Was when they threw me out.
They said I would not need it
‘Cause I would not be about.
