Taxpayer Victory #1:Â House Defunds MEADS
The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) applauded a vote by the House of Representatives this month to strip funding for the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS), a missile defense program created in 1995 to replace aging missile defense systems in the U.S., Germany, and Italy.  As outlined in CAGW’s March, 2012 issue brief, MEADS’ troubles have been well documented. The program has been plagued with cost overruns of nearly $2 billion and is 10 years behind schedule. A March 9, 2010, Washington Post report quoted an internal U.S. Army memo asserting that the program “will not meet U.S. requirements or address the current and emerging threat without extensive and costly modifications.â€Â While officials within the Department of Defense (DOD) have stated for the last several years that unilaterally cancelling MEADS was cost-prohibitive, a new report by DOD indicates that the U.S. can withdraw from the contract without committing additional money. Read more about MEADS.
