In yet another in a seemingly endless line of public school teachers forgetting their calling and function, Ohio health and gym teacher Stacy Schuler has been caught with her panties down when and where they shouldn’t be.
Despite pleading insanity and victimization, the 33 year old Ms. Schuler was sentenced to four years in prison for providing unauthorized and illicit extra sex-education help to five Mason High School students. The charges included 16 counts of sexual battery and 3 counts of providing alcohol to minors.
If she was insane, she has plenty of company.
Her 17 year old, football team seductees testified Ms. Schuler plied them with booze at her home and usually initiated the sexual contacts. Their parents furnished the trial’s comic relief by suggesting their sons had been damaged for life by their experience. Lecherous teachers throughout the land rejoiced in the addition of one more convicted pervert to their ranks. (http://huff.to/twR5Ax)
Actually, the rejoicing was not mentioned in the HuffingtonPost.com story anymore than it delved into the motivations and expectations of the randy teens when they repeatedly attended Ms. Schuler’s home-based sex lessons. Nor did HufPo explain how they were harmed by what will probably earn them the envy of their uninvited teammates and joint election as Mason High prom kings.
None of those observations are intended to absolve Ms. Schuler of her unprofessional iniquities but rather intended to put them and Schuler in some perspective. Neither do her gross lack of judgment, her uncontrolled lust, or her stupidity absolve her of responsibility but it should again be noted she is far from alone.

Back in the not so old days, male sexual indiscretions and assignations with female students were far from the norm but also far from unheard-of.
One student I now know better than when she was in my sophomore English class revealed years later that she was molested by a highly-respected music teacher. Another colleague was arrested, convicted, and imprisoned after he not only seduced a 16 year old but regularly took her to a local motel and videotaped their sexcapades.
As reprehensible as those instances were, in the last few decades female teachers like Stacy Schuler have been more and more in the news for joining in racy romps with children they were employed to teach and instead beguiled into bed and the back seats of their cars.
It would be difficult to dismiss sex education in our schools, sexual permissiveness in our society, and, yes, women’s liberation as causative factors in how too many female teachers now conduct themselves. Kids today are much more attuned to sex and it oozes out of television sets, society winks at flings, the libbers egg women on to be as licentious as men, and many females are lapping it all up.
Women in rogues galleries run the gamut from homely types to downright ugly, from pretty to downright stunning but no matter their appearance or the severity of their criminal child molestations are generally treated more leniently by courts and judges than the men they emulate.
Stacy Schuler could be out of the clinker in 6 months, which is a travesty. Still, statuesque, 25 year old blond bombshell and former Florida reading teacher Debra LaFave has to be the most infamous example of a woman educator who benefitted from her looks.
LaFave was awarded a get-out-of-jail-free card even after carrying on an extended affair with a 14 year old and later had her probation truncated by four years for good behavior. Washington elementary teacher Mary Kay Letourneau beat a similar rap. She bedded a sixth grader she had her eye on from second grade although she eventually spent seven years in the slammer because she violated her probation by resuming the sick relationship with the boy she subsequently married.
Whatever induces women to risk careers and abandon fundamental decency, their reputations and futures, and in some cases to exchange husbands and children for fleeting interludes with horny teens who exploit them as much as they are exploited is inexplicable but they continue to do it. And society’s double standard often lets them get away with it.
