Why We Are Targeting A Republican Senator

Amy Kremer | September 29, 2011

In November 2010, one of the biggest conservative victories of the year was the election of Senator Mike Lee, who defeated longtime Republican incumbent Bob Bennett of Utah.
We at Tea Party Express endorsed and supported Mike Lee, who became a hero to the tea party movement and a symbol of principled conservatives vs. the big-government establishment agenda. At the time, some people grumbled that we were working against Republican Bob Bennett, fearing that it would divide voters and hurt our majority.
The fact is, the very opposite is true. Voters expect their elected officials to stand firm on principle, rather than compromise every time things get tough or some slick lobbyist comes knocking on your door.
The same scenario in Utah is now playing out in Indiana, where Republican Senator Dick Lugar has been sitting in office for more than 30 years, slowly drifting further and further away from the basic ideals conservatives and Republicans are supposed to stand for. Lugar voted for the TARP bailout, voted to bailout Fannie and Freddie, voted against banning earmarks, and has repeatedly voted against cutting wasteful government spending.
What do we get if we try to play it safe and just re-elect the same tired old career politician? All we’ll get is more of the same. More government spending, more bailouts, more debt, and less personal freedom and liberty.
The purpose of the Tea Party movement is to hold politicians accountable to ‘We the People’, and to replace the worst offenders with true conservatives who remember why they were elected in the first place… to diligently represent their citizens back home, not to sell out what principles they had to the highest bidder.
The country as a whole is far better off without Bob Bennett in office, and will be doing better still when we replace Dick Lugar with a real conservative.

Later this week we’ll be announcing details of a major campaign to defeat Dick Lugar, but we’re going to need your support to pull this off. If you support tea party principles over career politicians, we need you to make a contribution of $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000 or more.
