50 Dead in Massive Al Qaeda Attack in Iraq
Move America Forward | March 31, 2011
Yesterday, in Iraq, over 50 people were killed when Al Qaeda carried out a large attack on a government building in Saddam Hussein’s home town of Tikrit.
“Two suicide bombers detonated themselves inside the provincial building, while other gunmen managed to seize members of the provincial council as hostages.” The gunmen kept hostages on the second floor of the building

The Al Qaeda fighters executed all of the hostages but thankfully all the terrorists were eventually killed by US Troops and Iraqi police. But the damage has been done, and at least 53 innocent Iraqis died.
According to an AFP report, U.S. forces were conducting a training/advising mission nearby and responded to distress calls from the Iraqi forces. US troops rushed to the scene and helped bring down the Al Qaeda attackers. This is exactly the kind of situation that we keep troops in Iraq for.
It serves as a reminder that although our troops have helped achieve major progress in Iraq, that country is still a dangerous place, and even though Al Qaeda has been defeated all over the country, there are still some small groups of extremists who are willing to carry out attacks on civilians.
That’s why we can’t forget our troops in Iraq, even though more of the fighting is now happening in Afghanistan, we shouldn’t forget that we still have over 50,000 in brave men and women serving in harm’s way in Iraq. Please send some March Madness care packages to help them!
