Vote for the 2010 Porker of the Year!
CAGW | January 29, 2011
Our public officials in Washington spent tax dollars like a bunch of drunken sailors in 2010, leaving taxpayers with a monstrous $14 trillion national debt hanging over their future. But who truly stood out as the worst custodian of your hard-earned money last year? Cast your vote for CAGW’s 2010 Porker of the Year!
Chosen by CAGW staff from among the 2010 Porkers of the Month, the nominees are:
* Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) – for parlaying his pivotal 60th vote for cloture on the Senate healthcare bill to secure, among other perks, the “Cornhusker Kickback” – a permanent exemption for Nebraska to the Medicaid expansion in the Senate bill, which would have saved the state between $59 million and $281 million.
* Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) – for securing 240 earmarks costing $490 million in fiscal year (FY) 2010, making him the biggest porker in CAGW’s Congressional Pig Book for the third year in a row. Since FY 2008, Sen. Cochran has taken home more than $2 billion in pork-barrel earmarks.
* FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski – for pushing forward with an ill-conceived and possibly extra-legal plan for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to impose regulations on the Internet.
* Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) – for sponsoring nepotistic legislation that would give federal funding to his daughter’s nonprofit organization and then claiming there was no conflict of interest.
* Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) – for exaggerating the effect of the failed economic stimulus package, making dubious claims about jobs numbers, and misleading the public about America’s true economic picture in an interview on the FOX Business Network.
* Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) – for ignoring any sense of fiscal prudence and being tone deaf to the will of the American people by refusing to go along with the earmark moratorium Senate Republicans approved on November 16, 2010.
Jeff, cast your vote by February 18 to help CAGW decide who will receive the “dishonor” of being named 2010 Porker of the Year!
Sincerely,
Thomas A. Schatz
President
