Firsts For Women In The Marine Corps

1918 – Pvt. Opha Mae Johnson enlists in the Marine Corps Reserve.

1943 – Begin continuous active-duty service in the Corps.

1949 – Begin training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C.

1961 – First woman is promoted to sergeant major.

1978 – Brig. Gen. Margaret A. Brewer is first female general officer.

1979 – Begin service as embassy guards.

1992 – Brig. Gen. Carol A. Mutter becomes first woman to take flag-level command of a Fleet Marine Force when she assumes
command of the 3rd Force Service Support Group on Okinawa.

1993 – 2nd Lt. Sarah Deal becomes first woman selected for naval aviation training.

1993 – Pilot positions opened to women.

1994 – Mutter becomes the Corps’ first woman major general and the senior woman on active duty in the armed services.

1995 – First female Marine pilot pins on naval flight wings.

1996 – Mutter becomes the Corps’ first woman lieutenant general and the second woman in armed services history to wear three stars.
