Beware Those Who “Somewhat” Approve

One man I was speaking with said to me, “Did you see? People are more supportive of Obama these days!” He is a die hard Obama supporter although he really doesn’t know much about what the President stands for and believes in. There is some vagueness about being for the “little guy” that causes him to be for the President and that is about all.
The other man involved in the conversation said in response, “It still doesn’t mean your guy is well liked.”
“Huh?” the first man said. “Have you seen the approval poll on Rasmussen? The President is almost back up to 50%!”
I smiled as the second man answered, “That’s total approval and includes people who only partially approve of what the President is doing. Take me for example. He signed tax rates into law for all Americans mostly renewing the Bush era rates as they were. If I were a generous person, and because I agree with his move on these tax rates along with the fact that he hasn’t cut and run in Afghanistan or closed GITMO yet then I could very well say that I ‘somewhat’ approve of the President and be included in those numbers. But it doesn’t mean that I think he has any business being our Commander in Chief and Chief Executive and I would not vote for him based on those things alone knowing what I do about him.”
The first man was stunned. He didn’t say a word in response and let it drop.
Yes, more people these days do approve of President Obama. But his strongly approve base is basically unchanged. In the Rasmussen Poll it still hovers at just about 25-28%. Beware the false sense of security that including those who somewhat approve of a few actions of the President while being against the bulk of his class warfare, socialist agenda may lead to.
Signing a popular tax rate extension into law and then disappearing for a few days to Hawaii is a good way to make people like you short term. But what happens when it is June and President Obama is back to his old ways again?
