Congressional Medal Of Honor Awarded To: Robert H. McCard

(Part of a continuing series of articles spotlighting United States Marines who have been awarded America's highest military award, the Congressional Medal of Honor.)

From the Presidential Citation:

Gunnery Sergeant Robert H. McCard was awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor for his heroic actions which cost him his life during the World War Two battle on the Japanese-held island of Saipan.

McCard's tank was put out of action by enemy fire, and he and his men were cut off from the other units of his platoon.

In the true spirit of the USMC, McCard brought all of his tank's weapons to bear on the enemy position, until the superiority of the hostile fire forced him to order his crew to escape from the tank.

While his men made their way out of the escape hatch, McCard covered them by exposing himself to enemy fire while throwing hand grenades.

When his supply of grenades ran out, McCard unbolted and used one of the tanks machine guns to fire upon the Japanese position in order to ensure the safety of his crew, killing over a dozen assitional Japanese soldiers, no doubt knowing in his heart that he was subjecting himself to certain death.
