Barack and His Amazing Technicolor Conversion!

Gene Lalor | September 30, 2010

Back in the old days, circa 1971 A.D., Don Imus, pre-WFAN and pre- his “nappy-headed ho’s” scandal, had a song-shtick on his morning radio show which featured the “Reverend Billy Saul Hargis,” pastor of the First Church of the Gooey Death and Discount House of Worship.

In part, the lyrics were, “Well, I don’t care if it rains or freezes/Long as I have my plastic Jesus/Riding on the dashboard of my car./  I can go a hundred miles an hour/Long as I got the almighty power/Glued up there by my pair of fuzzy dice.”

As irreverent as those lyrics were, our president may have outdone them in irreverence.  He’s glued his plastic Jesus up there next to his framed picture of himself.

The same man who proclaimed to the Muslim world that America was not a Christian nation seems to have experienced a Christian epiphany comparable to that of Saul of Tarsus.  Okay, Obama wasn’t knocked off his high horse and wasn’t blinded by a light but he must have had a startling epiphany nevertheless since he finally “got religion,” and the Christian religion at that!

Not one to often darken the doorways of churches since he tossed his pastor of 20 years under a Greyhound, along with the Reverend Jeremiah “God Damn America” Wright’s Trinity United Church of Christ, Barack Obama has finally cleared the festering air as to whether he is a Muslim or a Christian:  “President Obama took the issue of his faith head on Tuesday, telling residents in New Mexico that he is a ‘Christian by choice’ who came to religion later in life after being inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ.”

Now, is that a heartfelt, sincere profession of Christian faith or what?

He elaborated:  “And it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead–being my brothers’ and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me” and added that public service is “part of that effort to express my Christian faith.”  (He just had to get that self-aggrandizing plug in there.)

He even conceded that the United States “is still predominantly Christian,” http://tiny.cc/jrtz4, though apparently still not a Christian nation.  Go figure.

He didn’t quite segue into his version of the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer!” but, no fool he, Obama had laid the groundwork for his deep sense of Christianity by slipping a reference to his faith into a news conference earlier this month.  Then, with family in tow, he went across the street to St. John’s Episcopal Church on September 19th, attending church services for the first time in 5 months.  Following that very public display of religiosity, he announced  that he prayed every day.

 And not to Allah!

Of course going to church does not necessarily a good Christian make.  After all, Jimmy Carter attended regularly and still lusted in his heart and Ronald Reagan didn’t attend but it’s truly amazing how a little political pressure brings out the religion in some people.

McClatchy notes that just as Bill Clinton engaged Jesse Jackson as his spiritual advisor–after Bill was caught with his pants down and before Jesse was– Obama has his own advisors.

He  ”does consult with pastors and preachers personally, but has shied away from public discussions of his faith– at least until now.  That reticence appears to have changed since the release of a Pew poll in August that found 18 percent of Americans saying that Obama is a Muslim, up sharply from 11 percent in March 2009.  At the same time, the ranks of Americans who said, correctly, that Obama’s a Christian dropped from 48 percent to 34 percent, and the number who can’t name the president’s religion rose from 34 percent to 43 percent.”

Cynics might detect a hint of hypocrisy in Obama’s abrupt sense of religious fervor, hypocrisy which, not unexpectedly, White House aides sought to dispel by insisting that “there’s no deliberate strategy at work to counter the false impression that Obama’s a Muslim:”  http://tiny.cc/2i3qd

Even greater cynics might say his thinking is that, “I fooled them once, I can fool them again.”

The mainstream, the center, is the source of all good things for politicians and in that center are 225,000,000 American Christians.  Obama is tracking in that direction and thinks he can go “a hundred miles an hour” as long as he has his plastic Jesus on board.
