Murkowski The Libertarian?
J.J. Jackson | August 31, 2010
I just about spit my water all over my keyboard this morning when I read that Lisa Murkowski, if she fails to defeat Joe Miller in the Alaska GOP’s Senate candidate primary, might run as a “Libertarian.” Yes, according to the Boston Herald the Alaska Libertarian Party might openly embrace Murkowski.
There is a possibility that Murkowski could run on the Libertarian ticket in the November general election if she loses the Republican primary. The Alaska Libertarian Party is discussing the possibility and its Senate candidate, David Haase, has said he is open to talking to Murkowski about him stepping aside.
Really? Seriously? I was unaware that the Alaska Libertarian Party was really the Alaska Liberaltarian Party!
Murkowski is hardly a libertarian (which is basically a conservative no matter how “libertarians” want to parse it). Murkowski has stated that she thinks government run health care and insurance systems are good things; not a libertarian view point. Murkowski has stated that she thinks that Cap and Trade is a good idea; not a libertarian view point. Murkowski has was fully behind TARP and government bailouts; not a libertarian view point. Murkowski is pro-abortion (ie. murdering a child in the womb and denying said child his or her inalienable right to life) and, as much as some “libertarians” who refuse to use their brains hate to admit it, that is, again, not a very libertarian position.
The “Libertarian Party” is famous for its litmus tests where any slight deviation from true libertarian positions (even those poorly thought out) automatically disqualifies one from representing the party on the ballot. So the fact that they would be prepared to embrace Murkowski, a woman who has so repeatedly violated her duty to uphold the Constitution and act in accordance with the limited powers it grants is simply mind boggling.
