Let Freedom Sing

The Heritage Foundation | August 31, 2010

Who says all musicians lean left?

Not country music legend Charlie Daniels. He’s a big fan of The Heritage Foundation.

Last Saturday, at Sean Hannity’s Freedom Concert in Dallas, TX, the country music star spoke with members of our team about how much he admires The Heritage Foundation. He even asked Heritage’s Roger Whyte if he could have several copies of our Pocket Constitution. Daniels then handed the founding document to each member of his band — and kindly allowed us to capture photographic proof!

Heritage was also able to get each of the musical guests — the members of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, Michael Smith, and Charlie Daniels and his band — to gather around a Heritage sign for a photo. A keepsake we will treasure.

But the night wasn’t all about music — though the music was great! Public figures, including Freedom Alliance founder Col. Oliver North, Sean Hannity, Rep. Michelle Bachman (R-MN) and actor Jon Voight delivered remarks.

The Heritage Foundation was one of the two Presenting Sponsors for the sold-out event, which benefits the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund.

The Heritage team set up camp at the Allen Event Center, where the concert was held, equipped with educational materials about Heritage and conservative principles. All told, Heritage distributed 5,000 copies of our Pocket Constitution and several thousand copies of the Patriot’s Guide.  Many people, including Daniels, pledged their support of conservative principles on the spot.

The event was a tremendous success. It just goes to show that there is a tremendous demand for conservative principles in America’s heartland, where we can equip our allies with the tools necessary to keep the conservative momentum going. And if we didn’t make the trip, we might never have encountered Charlie Daniels or any of the thousands of others who stepped up to pass along the conservative torch and let freedom sing.
