Join Heritage at the 2010 Values Voters Summit
The Heritage Foundation | August 27, 2010
Here at The Heritage Foundation, we believe that traditional American values are foundational to American freedom and the common good.
Much of our research and policy recommendations aim to shape a healthy public discourse that appreciates the continuing significance of civic virtues in American society.
And we work closely with fellow conservative organizations and public figures to broadcast our principled message to the American public and engage them in today’s critical debates.
The Heritage Foundation is teaming up with the Family Research Council, the American Family Association, American Values, and Liberty University to sponsor the 2010 Values Voter Summit. The event will be held in Washington, D.C. from Sept. 17 to 19. Register today at ValuesVoterSummit.org.
The event will feature prominent conservatives including former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA), Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), Phyllis Schlafly, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR), Bill Bennett, Star Parker, and many more. (Watch this video about the event.)
The Heritage Foundation will have a strong presence at the event. Our experts will educate participants on important topics ranging from education and immigration to the importance of family and first principles.
On Friday, Sept. 17, Constitution Day, Heritage’s constitutional scholar Matthew Spalding will discuss his book, We Still Hold These Truths, and share his new video on why first principles matter today.

Here are a few other highlights:
- Heritage education expert Lindsey Burke will moderate a panel discussion about the connections between social and economic conservatism. The session will also include a screening of Let Me Rise, our powerful documentary on education reform.
- Jennifer Marshall, Heritage’s director of domestic policy studies, will moderate a discussion featuring the Wall Street Journal’s Stephen Moore and the Family Research Council’s Ken Blackwell. Both scholars contributed essays to Indivisible, a Heritage-published collection of essays by well-known social and economic conservatives that shows how these philosophies are the interdependent and vital to advancing freedom and human dignity.
- Heritage welfare expert Robert Rector will discuss immigration policies and recent developments in Arizona and Virginia.
- Chuck Donovan, a senior research fellow with Heritage’s DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society, will discuss same-sex marriage and its implications for the family.
The Heritage Foundation is participating because we believe in an America that is safe and secure; where choices in education, health care and retirement thrive; where taxes are fair, flat, and comprehensible; where everybody has the opportunity to go as far as their talents will take them; where government concentrates on its core functions, recognizes its limits and shows favor to none.
These are all conservative principles. And the majority of Americans align with them. Events like the 2010 Value Voters Summit help to bring these Americans together and renew their commitment to the conservative principles that have allowed our nation to flourish.
Heritage will be at the 2010 Value Voters Summit, and we hope to see you there, too!
> Other Heritage Work of Note
- The Heritage Foundation’s membership continues to grow. We proudly boast 684,000 members, and we have at least 1,000 members in 326 of the 435 congressional districts.
- If government expenditures continue to grow at their current pace, the national debt will stand at 100 percent of GDP by 2020. Half of all income taxes will go towards the interest payments alone, and each American household will be responsible for $150,000 of that debt. On National Review Online’s The Corner, Brian Riedl, a Heritage budget policy expert, explains that spending will have to decrease or the U.S. will be forced to adapt a European-style value-added tax in order for the country to keep its books in order.
- As America reduces its defense spending, China has become the second largest naval force in the world, surpassing Japan and South Korea. In the New York Post, Heritage’s Peter Brookes warns, “We need to win the fights we’re in now, but we need to be ready for the possible fights to come. That means having a well-balanced force able to address the contingencies we’ll face in the 21st century, whether that is terrorism, insurgency — or the rise of another major power.”
- Actor Clint Howard, brother of film director Ron Howard, appears in a new video from our sister organization, Heritage Action for America. The video addresses lawmakers’ timidity about holding town hall meetings with their constituents and their reluctance to sign onto the discharge petition to repeal Obamacare. This video has made appearances on popular blogs such as Hot Air and Newsbusters.
