Carter To Korea (again), Boehner v. Obama, Home Sales and more
The Heritage Foundation | August 29, 2010
- Former President Jimmy Carter is set to travel to North Korea on a private mission to free a U.S. citizen imprisoned there. The trip is not expected to change America’s tough posture against the rogue regime or spark any new diplomatic engagement.
- Minority Leader John Boehner (R–OH) has called for a “fresh start” on the economy, which would require the dismissal of President Obama’s current economic team.
- Home sales have taken the biggest one month plunge since the National Association of Realtors started tracking trends in 1999. Home sales in the month of July fell over 27 percent and overall year-over-year sales were down over 25 percent.
- Citing a federal law prohibiting the destruction of embryos for research purposes, a federal judge has overturned the Obama administration’s attempts to use federal funds for embryonic stem cell research.
- A column in the Washington Examiner puts the cost of the Iraq war into context. Obama’s first stimulus package and federal education spending all amount to more than the cost of the Iraq War.
- Another side effect of Obamacare has come to light: colleges and universities might soon be forced to stop offering low-cost plans to their students.
- A new public school in Los Angeles cost taxpayers more than half a billion dollars. Other recent schools built in the city cost $377 million and $232 million. With this sort of fiscal discipline, it’s not really a surprise that the school system faces a $640 million deficit.
