Next Step For The BP Oil Spill In The Gulf Of Mexico The planned next step to be taken by BP in trying to plug the Gulf oil spill is a process being called a "top kill". This attempt will seek to stem the gushing flow of oil created when the Transocean Deepwater Horizon burned and sank five weeks ago. Since then more than 54,000 square miles of fishing waters have been shut by the federal government and 70 miles of the Louisiana coastlinehave been covered by the oil slick. The "top kill" would entail dumping 50,000 barrels of dense mud into the leaking pipes, in an attempt to use a method that has been successful in the past, but that has never been tried at this depth of 5,000 feet. The final decision to move ahead with the "top kill" has not yet been made by the Chief Executive of BP, Tony Hayward. Hayward has said that if unsuccessful, this procedure could actually make the leak worse than it already is...
