Celebrate Memorial Day in thanksgiving

Freedom isn’t cheap. Its price is high. But its value never decreases. Its cause is always noble. And so, too, are its protectors and defenders.

Throughout our young nation’s history, thirteen wars have come and gone and with them, many guardians of freedom have fallen. Their sacrifice bestows upon the next generation a spectacular inheritance: freedom. But their legacy requires a constant defense.

As President Ronald Reagan once famously stated:

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.

Our Founding Fathers uniquely recognized in the Declaration of Independence that liberty is an unalienable right endowed to us by our Creator. But it is a right that carries with it great responsibility and expectation. It was former President and Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant’s wish that “those who seek the blessings of [America’s] institutions and the protection of its flag remember the obligations they impose.”

May we always remember those who have satisfied these “obligations” so that their fellow countrymen can enjoy the “blessings” and “protection” of freedom. You and I are the heirs of their great sacrifices and the cause for which they made them.

From all of us at The Heritage Foundation, thank you to all of you who have served, currently serve and who one day will serve to protect this noblest of causes: our freedom. We celebrate this Memorial Day in recognition of – and in thanksgiving for – you and your unwavering commitment to the home of the brave so that we may remain the land of the free.
