The Prophetic John Birch Society

Probably no other conservative organization or individual has been more maligned and misrepresented over the past 50 years than the John Birch Society and its irrepressible founder, Robert Welch. They were before their time in many ways.
Moonbattery.com featured a piece on the JBS and Welch which highlighted how prophetic and insightful they were as far back as 1958 when the JBS was founded.
Among those insightful warnings to America were Welch’s remonstrances on government waste, wild spending, higher and higher taxes, runaway inflation, imbalanced budgets, socialistic wage, price, and materials controls, centralization of power, control of education, an emphasis on peace at any price, and surrender at any cost.
After a mere 14 months in office, Obama hasn’t accomplished all those goals but he’s well on his way.

I was privileged to be an early member of the John Birch Society, dating back to 1962–my brother was a charter member–and I experienced first hand the extremes to which leftists would go to besmirch the organization.
One classic example I will never forget.
I attended a JBS meeting before I signed up and a reporter from my college newspaper was also in attendance. He wrote an article ostensibly covering what happened at that meeting.
It was difficult to believe it was the same meeting but even though it occurred almost a half century ago, I still recall what happened.
The speaker entered the small room, introduced himself, briefly addressed the 20 or so attendees, introduced a brief film on the society, after which there was an extended Q&A session.
My liberal college reporter’s account went something like this: “The John Birch Society cell meeting began punctually when the lights were extinguished. In the dark, the speaker entered, spoke a few words, and immediately retreated behind a large screen. The film centered on the evils of the United States after which the unidentified speaker asked, ‘Any questions?’ and quickly exited before there could be any.”
Honestly, that was the gist of his report.
Fifty-two years later the mission of the JBS, the death of which is greatly exaggerated, remains the same: “To bring about less government, more responsibility, and–with God’s help–a better world by providing leadership, education, and organized volunteer action in accordance with moral and Constitutional principles.”
Can any real American take issue with that? May God bless the JBS!
