The Final Prejudice: Catholicism

L. Brent Bozell concludes his brief essay, “A Year of Anti-Religious Bigotry” with this passage: “Catholicism is the single largest religious denomination in America. In our news and entertainment media today, anti-Catholicism remains ‘the last acceptable prejudice.’ It is not that the cultural left is out of touch. It is out to destroy.”
Sound exaggerated? As a Roman Catholic, I would suggest Bozell’s remarks seem exaggerated only to non-Catholics and to the leftists to whom he refers.
In his book, The Enemy at Home, conservative writer Dinesh D’Souza defines the cultural left as referring mainly to “the left wing of the Democratic Party . . . [including] the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Organization for Women, People for the American Way, Planned Parenthood, Human Rights Watch, and Moveon.org.”
According to D’Souza, among the stars of that group are Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Michael Moore, George Soros, Barbara Boxer, Bill Moyers, Noam Chomsky, and the late Ted Kennedy and its influential allies in Congress, Hollywood, the media, the non-profit sector, and the universities: http://bit.ly/cfEEFR
That’s some powerful army!
D’Souza’s controversial book focuses on the relationship between the cultural left and September 11th, 2001 as opposed to Bozell’s immediate interest in its effect on religion, specifically on Catholicism, which leads to the obvious question of, Why?
Why would nominal Catholics such as Kennedy and Pelosi and former Catholic Moore as well as nominal Jews such as Chomsky and Soros be so intent on, as Bozell contends, destroying Catholicism?
Why would such groups as N.O.W., P.P., et al. want to destroy any religion?
In his article, Bozell, a Catholic and the president of the Media Research Center and other conservative groups, points to nine specific print media and entertainment media examples of venomous anti-Catholic pieces and shows.
He also alludes to the Catholic League’s “2009 Report on Anti-Catholicism” which lists sixty-eight pages of like examples: http://bit.ly/cUq53f
Again, why is this “single largest religious denomination in America” singled out by the cultural left to be an object of vitriolic ridicule, disdain, and outright abuse? Islam, Judaism, the various eastern sects, and other Christian groups seem to be immune from such attacks, so, Why?
One proffered excuse is the shameful betrayal of their religion and of their responsibilities by mostly homosexual priests who are finally, slowly, being weeded out of the priesthood. The gay-indulgent, licentious left, however, wouldn’t get very exercised over gay, perverted priests.
Another baseless excuse is the Church’s immense wealth which leftists would rather see disbursed to the have-not nations of the world and their have-not peoples. Regrettably, that would only result in an impoverished Church incapable of doing any of the great good it does accomplish.
There is only one reasonable explanation for the cultural left’s hatred toward the Pope, the Catholic Church, and all they stand for: the Church’s adamant refusal to change with the times, to equivocate on timeless morality, and to budge an iota on their commitment to the right to life of the pre-born.
Abortion is a virtual sacrament to the left and anyone or any group in firm and universal opposition to that sacrament must be abused and demonized in order to validate the left’s belief in a right to kill.
The Catholic Church is rife with problems right now but it will survive them. That fact, too, is incendiary and infuriating to the cultural left.
