Rush Hour Road Work Returns To Pittsburgh
J.J. Jackson | March 10, 2010
The weather is warming as the nefarious problem of man-made hemispherical climate change is upon us. The snow is melting and with Spring just around the corner it is time once again for road crews around Pittsburgh to begin filling the inevitable potholes that form every winter and that we as motorists hit with regularity. It is also time once again for these same road crews to act as though they are the most important thing in the world and that everyone else must bow to them. Yes, this morning came the typical traffic reports announcing proudly that during rush hour traffic was being made worse in some places because road crews had to start doing their job at the most inconvenient time of the day – the morning rush.
The question is why? Oh, I know the excuses because I have been told them every year for as long as I can remember. Road crews are out early in the morning because that is when they start working. With the slight chance of rain later on they wanted to get as much work done as they could before that rain might start to fall. It was one of the first days this year warm enough for crews to work and do the job and they had to get as much done as possible. Then there is the one I really like, the one where they claim that they are just being responsive to complaints as these massive craters are annoying motorists who keep slamming into these broken pieces of pavement with their cars.
Yeah. Well call me cynical. Some of these pot holes have been out there since last December and many have been there since January so what is one or two more days if it takes that long to get the job done by not causing thousands of commuters to be later than normal? Silly me for thinking that, even though I find the inevitable potholes annoying each year, one more day or week just won’t make that much difference in the grand scheme of things.
Nope, the only thing I can come up with is the road crews and those commanding them just wanted to remind us people that pay their salaries that they can show up and make our commutes even more miserable. Silly me for thinking that they could just start a few hours later instead of rushing out to find ways to make Pittsburgh traffic even more horrendous.
I can understand if there was a huge, completely impassable pothole on a road that you would want to get these crews out there right away. But most if not all of those being patched at the absolute worst time of day, a time of day that only an insane person would suggest the work be done at, were not such hazards.
