When Abortion Stats Become Real

Gene Lalor | February 23, 2010

The statistics branch of mathematics is usually as dry as unbuttered toast.  All those charts and diagrams and numbers tend to deaden the brain of all but those who work with any particular stats.

It’s only when statistics are converted into concrete realism that they become relevant, and even shocking to most people.

We can read that there are X-number of traffic fatalities on a given road or day or Y-number of graduates of a particular school who can’t read and the figures may or may not be interesting but not nearly as engrossing as after someone we know is killed in an accident or after we hire an illiterate grad.

So it is with abortion statistics until someone dies in a botched abortion, or someone encounters an aborted baby, or dozens of frozen fetuses discovered in a raid on a doctor’s office.  For some, it’s only then that abortion statistics take on a concrete, tangible quality.

Police in Philadelphia conducted a 2 day raid on the offices of abortionist Dr. Kermit Gosnell three months after a woman allegedly died during an abortion procedure.

Why it took 3 months to investigate is unclear but what the police, state and DEA agents discovered at the office was quite vivid–the bodies of dozens of pre-born, aborted infants stored in a freezer http://bit.ly/dvIxFa

In the 37 years since the Supreme Court Roe v Wade decision legalized abortion in America, the “procedure” has become almost commonplace even though it’s all but incomprehensible that extinguishing some 50,000,000 human lives could ever be commonplace.

However, when someone you know has undergone an abortion, or someone you know has a relative or acquaintance who they believe may have aborted a baby, unfortuntely it has to be termed common.

For the raiders in Philly, it became much more than that.

The writer of the story makes reference to the “shocking discovery” not because dozens of dead fetuses were statistically relevant in the context of many millions.

He was shocked because he had come face to face, up close and personal with the reality of those dozens who became no longer merely numbers but former living beings.

The abortion issue has long been a hot button topic for various reasons ranging from a woman’s right to choose life or death for her unborn child to the extreme cases of pregnancy arising from rape and incest.  On the other side, pro-lifers believe life begins at conception and no one has the right to terminate that life.

What’s never been explored to my knowledge is the question of how many of those most viscerally opposed to preserving the life of the pre-born have themselves aborted a life or who is closely related to someone who has.

Knowing those stats wouldn’t negate their position but could reinforce the positions of pro-lifers who propose that women intent on killing their babies in utero be fully apprised and informed of the ramifications of that decision.

Pro-abortionists also viscerally oppose such reasonable education.

In a late development today, the Pennsylvania Department of State Board of Medicine closed down Dr. Gosnell’s abortion mill and suspended his license to practice medicine after federal agents found ” ‘deplorable and unsanitary’ conditions, including blood on the floor and parts of aborted fetuses in jars:” http://bit.ly/d5nQCN

How’s that for shocking realism, Dr. Mengele?
