The Health Care Summit

Gene Lalor | February 22, 2010

Is this the face of a man ready and willing to compromise on anything, no less on the one issue he needs and wants to establish his legacy, Obamacare?

On Thursday, America will be treated to an event unprecedented in our history, a televised extravaganza featuring the President of the United States and principals from both the Democrat and Republican parties all gathered together to hammer out an ostensibly bi-partisan compromise solution for the nation’s broken health care system.

Today, 3 days prior to what is being billed as a Health Care Summit, the president presented his promised version of Obamacare and posted it in its entirety on the White House website thereby finally fulfilling his pledge of the utmost transparency to enable Americans to read, review, and evaluate the details of his plan: http://bit.ly/58c608

This is a very appropriate occasion for every man, woman, and child in the country to chant in unison the stirring words of “The Obama Song,” “Umm, umm, umm, Barack Hussein Obama, umm, umm, umm.”

Either that or sing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” since Thursday’s summit should see a battle royale in the White House as Republican attendees confront the president with a few pertinent questions:

.  How he specifically proposes to pay for his trillion dollar boondoggle without raising the already bloated deficit;

.  Why his plan does not include any mention of requisite tort reform;

.  What constitutional authority he plans to invoke to dictate insurance company rate increases;

.  Why he would now allow federal taxpayer funding to pay for abortion services, something he swore repeatedly would not be the case;

.  What specific measures will be taken to “cut government spending and reduce waste, fraud, and abuse;”

.  How is this summit on “comprehensive health care reform” in any way bi-partisan if he will not listen to and seriously consider these concerns of the American people and the Republican Party?

By the way, that” battle royale” is wishful thinking.  It will never happen and those questions will never be asked at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Thursday.

Instead, on national television, Republicans will sit and listen respectfully to the president, not jump to their feet and indignantly cry, “You lie!” nor mouth the words, “That’s not true.”

The Party of the Opposition will then emerge from the White House confident that it had conducted itself grandly and civilly–and the president will have won the battle minimale.

Republican leaders will then take to the mikes and cameras and protest Obama’s highhanded approach to bipartisanship but it won’t matter an iota.  Obama will have manipulated them and will have won the Obamacare war in the hearts and minds of the people.

I hope I’m wrong.
