Phoenix To Tax People Simply For Living

Liberals get really desperate when it comes to all the promises they have made but cannot pay for. It gets so bad in places like Phoenix that that city is now preparing to tax people just for living and doing what they need to do in order to live. According to azcentral.com the City Council is getting ready to slap a 2% tax on food.
Yes, you heard right, the Phoenix City Council is actually going to tax people for eating – something that people need to do in order to live.
As usual, the city, facing a budget deficit of nearly $250 million did what liberals always do when they don’t want to cut spending but have over extended themselves and are thus hunting for extra money; they targeted police and fire departments. Yeah, I know, those things that government actually can have a legitimate function in providing are always on the chopping block to drum up anger and at least tepid support for tax increases.
There were other things targeted to be cut too including: “libraries and senior centers would be closed, an after-school program would be dismantled, and bus and light-rail service would be significantly reduced.” Well, at least those are things that are borderline and yeah, I agree, if you cannot afford them should be cut. No reason to go into debt for perks.
And the warfare between the classes begins with this salvo as the tax would fall heavily on the poor and those with larger families. A liberal class warfare monger suggested targeting the evil fast food restaurants instead of her:
Elizabeth Van Wie told the council that the tax will be devastating for her family of six, which spends $900 to $1,300 a month on groceries. Business at the Van Wies’ car wash has taken a 60 percent dive during the recession, and the family has begun growing vegetables to save money.
She suggested taxing fast food, cigarettes or alcohol, instead. “To tax a basic need for my family is disastrous,” said Van Wie, her four young children in tow.
Yes, because we all know that fast food joints are evil. While I sympathize and even agree with Ms. Van Wie that the tax is wrong to be levied on her and her family, because again food is pretty much a necessity of life, I think she is diabolical for daring to suggest that a particular class of people and business (fast food restaurants and those that patronize them) just so she can avoid being hit with the bill.
The real question however is this, when Phoenix residents start driving out of the city and buying their groceries in neighboring areas that do not have the tax and the revenues fall way short of projections, what will be their next tactic? A per breathe tax on every resident to compensate for the evil, polluting carbon dioxide they are expelling with each exhale? Perhaps they will just increase the food tax to 5% then 10% and so on not learning their lessons? Oh, I am sure they will come up with something good. Liberals always do.
Bet ya if they would just focus on the basic function of government and let the free market set the wages they pay for such things they wouldn’t have these problems. Call it a hunch. But in reality city governments like those in Phoenix are just a lot of bloat from promises stacked on promises over the years to buy votes.
