Horses and Horses’ Arses
Gene Lalor | February 28, 2010
It’s an eternal enigma with no satisfactory answer: Why did God create so many more horses’ arses than horses? It’s long posed an epistemological dilemma that may never be resolved since the conundrum is ongoing.
Cases in point:
Welcome to our America: Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana, a school affiliated with the Mennonite Church which preaches non-violence, has agreed for the first time in its 116 year old history to permit the playing of (an instrumental version of) the national anthem at some varsity sporting events.
That represents a sea change in Goshen policies and politics.
Pushed into lifting the anthem ban by negative publicity arising from a media awareness of the prohibition, Goshen President Jame Brennaman defended the new policy by saying, “Playing the anthem offers a welcoming gesture to many visiting our athletic events, rather than an immediate barrier to further opportunities for getting to know one another.”
Whatever that means.
In deference to the pacifist beliefs of the Mennonite Church, Brennaman graciously added, “Spectators would not be asked to ‘honor’ or ‘give allegiance’ but simply be invited to respectfully stand during the playing of the national anthem:” http://bit.ly/bF8e29
The relevant question is why Goshen College took over a century to realize that its very existence is dependent on an America having a powerful military able and willing to wreak a terrible vengeance upon any enemy foolish enough to attack us, or Goshen.
In the process, troops volunteer to risk their lives for Goshen “o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
It’s good to see Goshen finally came to the realization that demonstrating respect for country in no way negates anyone’s respect for God.
RCV Substituted for RSVP because of DADT: The chaplain’s office at Andrews AFB retracted its Respond If You Please invitation to former Marine officer Tony Perkins to speak at its prayer luncheon and made it RCV, Stay Home, instead.
The chaplain was miffed because the religious conservative Perkins heads the Family Research Council which opposes Obama’s plan to revoke the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy regarding homosexuals and Perkins had expressed his negative feelings on the matter on the FRC website.
In a letter rescinding the invitation, the chaplain said, “As military members, we are sworn to support our commander-in-chief, and are forbidden to make or support statements which run counter to our roles in the armed forces.”
The letter gave the precise reason for telling Perkins to stay home: “statements posted on the Family Research Council Web site which are incompatible in our role as military members who serve our elected officials and our commander-in-chief:” http://bit.ly/aTERUY
Perkins
told CNS News, “I would have never used this venue as a political venue to even mention the president, unless it was to pray for him. This was to focus on the spiritual needs of the men and women in uniform.”
Apparently, the spiritual needs of our armed forces, free speech, and religious freedom take second place to political correctness and catering to the homosexual lobby at Andrews Air Force Base.
Senator Casey Dumps Pope for Obama: Ostensibly Catholic Senator Robert Patrick Casey has virtually abandoned all sense of principle in favor of Barack Hussein Obama.
To the surely eternal chagrin of his deceased father, Bob Casey the Younger has repeatedly shown that his ambitions take precedence over whatever moral principles he once had as he enthusistiastically leans more left and further away from Catholic teachings with each passing vote.
Speaking out of both the pro-life and pro-abortion sides of his mouth, Casey has already distinguished himself as an Obama acolyte with his ambivalence on the right to life. See “Bob Casey vs. Pre-Born Life,” http://bit.ly/bqwoyA
Now the senator has retreated into the politician’s favorite retreat, the Land of No Comment, on the issue of the Pope and Harry Knox, President Obama’s advisor on the government’s Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnership programs, and the director of the religion and faith program at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a homosexual activist group.
Knox has said Pope Benedict XVI was “hurting people in the name of Jesus,” (see http://bit.ly/ajP4wj). Casey has said nothing either against Knox or in favor of the Pope, preferring instead to proclaim his ignorance of what’s going on in Washington.
In an interview with CNS News, Casey repeatedly professed his admiration for his spiritual leader, Benedict, and repeatedly resorted to the ignorance defense when asked if he supported Knox or the Pope’s point of view: http://bit.ly/9jXCjc
Talk and admiration are cheap, Bob, as are academic pacifism and military political correectness. Words devoid of accompanying deeds in support of those words aren’t signs of a great orator but signs of hypocritical horses’ arses.
