General Jim Jones The Type of General That Makes You Want To Run Away From Military Service

Almost immediately after General Jim Jones, Barack Obama’s point man from the military who the President sends out to face questions from the press, appeared on Fox New Sunday today and once again lamented that the, “the surge [in Iraq] is a tactic, not a strategy,” I began getting emails from many people in the military that I converse with regularly. Those people range from current and former enlisted men to officers and even a retired General who repeatedly has some of the harshest things to say about the Obama administration.

If I could summarize the tone of the comments of these fine men and women it would be that people like General Jim Jones are the types of “leaders” that make them want to run away from military service. And I fully understand why. When you have a man like this, who is obviously searching for a coherent thought to try and defend Vice President Biden claiming that Iraq will be a great accomplishment of the Obama Administration, and lend some sort of convoluted credence to the absurd claim (seeing as how Obama was against the war and every strategy undertaken to win it and the current “plan” was put in place by President Bush), believe me I fully understand why they feel this way.

These are the sorts of sophomoric, semantic non-argument arguments that really tick people off.

And to show why I say that, let me quote Webster’s dictionary.

Tactic: “a device for accomplishing an end” or “a method of employing forces in combat”
Strategy: “(1) : the science and art of employing the political, economic, psychological, and military forces of a nation or group of nations to afford the maximum support to adopted policies in peace or war (2) : the science and art of military command exercised to meet the enemy in combat under advantageous condition”

The definition of “tactic” is basically as shorthand notation of the definition of “strategy.” To sit there and say there there is some big difference between these two things in order to throw up a smoke screen to defend the comments of a man who did nothing but work as hard as he could for years to make sure Iraq would fail is beneath anyone of the rank of General. But it goes to show you how far some people will go to serve a political master over the truth.
