As the dust settles over the planet following the longest speech of President Obama’s political life, (70 minutes), which included this downer line, “We do not give up. We do not quit. We do not allow fear or division to break our spirit,” the wags are wagging and the talking heads are talking their heads off.
If Obama meant to invoke Churchill’s, “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,” he didn’t come close and, besides, he doesn’t smoke cigars.
Various observers did come close, to burlesque, to insight, and to honesty.
. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews 
is always ready to inadvertently inject some absurd humor into the political scene and he scored again last night.
You may recall MSNBC, it’s the cable news network that no one watches. And you may recall Matthews who, not once but twice, experienced a “thrill” up his leg during the presidential campaign while in the presence of his Obamassiah.
I thought at the time it could be a touch of bursitis or arthritis.
Fortunately or unfortunately for the easily-thrilled Chris, he had no cheap thrills after the State of the Union address. However, he did redeem himself by experiencing what he later described as “almost like an epiphany.”
That mystical revelation followed Matthew’s realization that “He [Obama] is post-racial by all appearances. You know, I forgot he was black tonight for an hour. You know, he’s gone a long way to become a leader of this country and passed so much history in just a year or two.”
I’m not sure what any of that means and I’m especially confused as to how anyone passes history except in secondary school but I’m appreciative of the levity, Chris.

. The Brits who are rarely thrilled by anything and almost never experience epiphanies provided a notably more insightful and objective summary of the president’s “year or two” than did Matthews.
At least one of the queen’s subjects assigned Obama a resounding grade of “F for world leadership.”
A few months back, Obama generously and prematurely awarded himself an overall B+ for his first year in office but anyone knows even kids shouldn’t be allowed to grade their own work.
Nile Gardiner’s F is largely the result of the “scant attention” that Obama paid to international affairs in his speech, which is largely the result of Obama paying scant attention to international affairs over the past 12 months.
In part that’s due to the departure of the bloom from the Obama rose in Europe, in part to his inability to order his priorities.
When one is committed to domestic “change we can believe in,” ideology tends to get in the way of everything else and trifles such as war and peace get shuffled off the table. When one also suffers from IIS, International Ignorance Syndrome, issues of war and peace barely make it to the table.
Gardiner rudely reminds the president that “the global war,” Afghanistan, Iran, as well as Burma, Sudan, Zimbabwe, et al. are still out there and all but bubbling over, yet ”there was not a shred of hope offered in Barack Obama’s address” to any of those concerns: http://bit.ly/9P1QNv
Earth to Obama: It’s time to get hopping on something else besides Obamacare!
. Thank the lord for the internet which publicizes political lies and distortions, even in SotU addresses, and holds politicians’ feet to the fire by fact checking spurious “facts” and exposing the God’s honest truth beneath the public muck.
The Associated Press’ Calvin Woodward did a fact check on Obama’s speech and the results should get the American citizenry reaching for their pitchforks. Even worse for the president is that the AP seems to have turned on him.
When enemies attack, it’s anticipated and usually defendable; when former FOO’s, Friends of Obama, attack it must be extremely scary for the attackee.
The reader is invited to peruse the details of the 10 “facts” checked and revealed in the sober light of day, the Obamian misrepresentations, unverifiables, and outright lies, via the link below. For those too lazy to do that, I present summaries of the best of the pack:
. Obama said he would appoint a bi-partisan deficit commission. He’s shown minimal to no bi-partisanship to date and his commission would be as toothless as Helen Thomas at bedtime;
. Obama proposed a 3-year freeze on government spending, starting next year. In doing so, he stole John McCain’s idea that he had criticized in the campaign and, if it goes through, will amount to wiping out all of 1% of the deficit;
. Obama weighed in again against evil lobbyists, those same evil lobbyists he said he would ban a year ago. “Seven waivers from the ban have been granted to White House officials alone.” (He also campaigned against legislative earmarks, then agreed to thousands of them);
. Obama claimed to have created or saved 2 million jobs in the course of the year. The CBO: “It is impossible to determine how many of the reported jobs would have existed in the absence of the stimulus package.”
