The Westboro Devil Cites Scripture
Gene Lalor | December 16, 2009
One of the many beauties of our great democratic republic is America’s tolerance for kookery. Another is America’s encouragement of reasoned dissent.
I rarely if ever find myself siding with those who support groups and individuals who advocate against other groups which blatantly campaign against the best interests of the United States but in this case I must make a very limited exception.
The Westboro Baptist Congregation, the WBC, so thrives on outlandish and hateful propaganda that it must be regarded as one of the worst organizations in the nation in terms of vicious radicalism.
Make no mistake, the WBC has countless hate-peers. Nevertheless, it’s a standout performer, in a class by itself, especially when it comes to attacks on homosexuals and Jews.
What makes the WBC even worse is that it cites both Old and New Testament scripture to bolster its points of view and its vile invective. Its website, Godhatesfags.com, cites Calvinistic interpretations of Holy Scripture as Biblical truth: http://bit.ly/5SIUDE
Founded by Pastor Fred Phelps and in business for over half a century, Westboro boasts of staging over 40,000 “peaceful demonstrations” since 1991, mostly in opposition to homosexuality and gays and Jews but also ”at over 200 military funerals of troops whom God has killed in Iraq/Afghanistan in righteous judgment against an evil nation.”
Pastor Phelps and his WBC think it is right and just to shamelessly disgrace themselves with protests at the final rites for American military heroes in front of their grieving families and friends simply because they erroneously believe we are an “evil nation.”
However, the brunt of their protest activities is directed at gays for whom I have no empathy when they engage in recruiting children to their lifestyles which is as reprehensible as profaning the funerals of our troops killed in battle.
That recruitment subject has been discussed here in numerous articles.
Still, gays especially simply love conservatives who come to their defense and suggest the defender is in the closet and protesting too much, oft-heard in comments on my posts.
Feel free too go at me, gaysters, figuratively, but do be advised I still believe your ilk is a bane on the planet and an ugly wart on humanity’s arse.
Nevertheless, fair is fair and reasoned critiques such as mine are reasoned critiques regarding anyone, including homosexuals and the other prime target of Westboro, those of the Jewish persuasion.
According to the Palm Beach Post, “Few people paid any attention or took the anti-Semitic and anti-homosexual protestors seriously” when the Kansas-based WBC protested outside the office of the Jewish Community Center of the Greater Palm Beaches.
The estimation that “few people paid any attention” may be more wishful thinking than accurate reporting on the part of Palm Beach Post reporter, Jason Schultz who, I’m guessing, is Jewish.
His gender identification is somewhat less transparent.
The WBC also demonstrated outside the Seminole Ridge High School where they were received with less than approbative affirmation from the students, according to Schultz.
Schultz cited a lone observer of the Palm Beach protest, Mike Cahill, as saying, “The central message of the Gospel is good news and the good news is that God loves everyone. This seems to be counter to the message because it is hateful.”
Another passer-by “flipped them middle fingers,” which seems a redundancy.
In a counter-demonstration against Westboro, two kosher deli employees dressed as a pickle and a hot dog to demonstrate what a “joke” the WBC was: “It’s a joke. We’re showing what a joke they are. They’re trying to get us upset but they’re losers. They’re nothing:” http://bit.ly/8MIz4t
That typically-dismissive comment and those “middle fingers” may just be at the crux of the Westboro campaign.
Which side acted more like juveniles is debatable, which side was more un-American less so. The WBC wins that vote hands-down.
Pastor Phelps
should be reminded that, as Shakespeare wrote, ”The devil can cite scripture for his purpose” and that evil men and institutions can distort scripture.
Twisted sister websites of the Westboro Baptist Church include godhatestheworld.com, americaisdoomed.com, and jewskilledjesus.com.
If there’s any truth to the view that we are known by the company we keep then Pastor Phelps and his retinue at the WBC are indeed twisted.

First of all, I would never defend any homosexual. They are like you said a “wart on America’s arse”.
But, if this church was truly a Christian church, they would love the Jewish people and do anything they could to support the Jews. That is a commandment from God. When anyone demeans, degrades or otherwise denounces Jews, they have poked their finger into God’s eye.
They are walking on shaky ground when they demean God’s chosen.
