The Pain Is Good
J.J. Jackson | December 16, 2009
When my two year old daughter tries to climb into her brother’s crib in the living room and then flips over the side and lands with a thud inside she cries. But she never does it again. When she climbs on the table and then tries to get down again before daddy sees her and can’t quite stick the landing because it is a little too high for her she cries. But she never does it again.
Children learn their limits by hurting themselves. No matter how many times I tell her not to do something, she still does it until she hurts herself if even only in a minor way. Pain is always the best teacher because people are hard wired to avoid pain.
Right now a lot of Americans are in pain. They didn’t save their money. They spent and they spent. They bought on credit. They didn’t do enough at their jobs to make themselves so indispensible to their boss that they were among those laid off. They elected people to office who year after year passed all sorts of goofy laws that hurt businesses and their employees. They did a lot of things that have put themselves and this country in a terrible possition.
But we are where we are. The pain is good because Americans are learning. They are learning what really happens when you do dangerous things. The children are growing up.
