In Defense of “Milk Toast” Republicanism
J.J. Jackson | December 13, 2009
No, I am not going to defend milk toast Republicans. I am going to defend my use of the word “milk toast” to describe them because apparently there are some people that do not know what Milk Toast is and think that they are pretty darn smart when in fact their information and knowledge is lacking. In addition to emails from uninformed people telling me the term is “milquetoast” and not “Milk Toast” there have also been a few individuals on the web making similar claims. One example is this comment thread over at Free Republic where someone posted my article for the member of that site to read.
Right off the bat some uninformed soul claimed I needed an “editor” solely based on the fact that he was unaware of the term and its origins. You will note that I had to take time out of my busy day to actually create an account there and respond to this insanity. In order to keep from doing this over and over I have just decided to set the record straight.
While Milquetoast is indeed a modern term for someone that is bland and weak, that term comes from the name of the food Milk Toast which existed long before the character named Caspar Milquetoast who exhibited the qualities of the food. Although the later food related term has fallen out of favor due to a decrease in the popularity or the once much more common food, the fact remains that Milk Toast is a real thing and its characteristics were what I was comparing Republicans to.
And I fully intended to compare RINO republicans to Milk Toast which is a bland and soft food. Now, for all of you out there that have tried this complaint do you have anything of substance to argue? No? Didn’t think so.
I do so love giving the grammar and spelling police a whack on the nose when they are wrong.
