Gates: Obama withdrawal plan meant as prod for Afghans

UPDATED: Top Obama administration officials said Wednesday that a plan to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan by mid-2011 is intended to push that country's government to assume responsibility for the nation's long-term security but that President Obama will consider a midcourse correction. A day after Mr. Obama outlined plans to escalate the war with an additional 30,000 U.S. troops in the coming months, Defense Secretary Robert M.
