‘Don We Now Our Gay Apparel’?

Most Christmas music provides a spiritual blessing to those who wish to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is uplifting, joyful, and celebratory in a world embroiled with cynicism and corruption.

There are exceptions.

For example, the lyrics to a favorite, Deck the Halls, include the following peculiar stanza:

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
'Tis the season to be jolly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la

Not to be insensitive, but just what the hell is “gay apparel” and who is this “Don” dude?

Although I am no theologian, I urge parents to force their children to wear "straight" apparel, forget about this Don character, and avoid using undefined F words at Christmas!

One Response to “‘Don We Now Our Gay Apparel’?”

You have to consider this was written well before homosexuals stoled the word “gay” and started using it to describe their lifestyle which to me is anything but gay. The word gay meant happy, cheerful, full of joy, etc. So the words “Don we now my gay apparel…” mean, more or less, to be happy, cheeful and upbeat over the Christmas season. And if I am not mistaken, the word “don” was used to iunfer “putting on” This song is one of my favorite songs, although Oh Holy Night tops my list. It is unfortunate we are now living in so-called “politically correct” times which as far as I am concerned are “politically corrupt” times! If your comments were intended as a satire on today’s political environment, I do apologize, however, I am replying on the basis of your questioning the song itself. Thank you for this opportunity.
