Why Do These Elitist Bastards Lie?

Witness if you will, the Chairman of the D.C. Council, a man who weilds enormous political power and who can make or break companies by simply choosing whether or not to award them lucrative contracts. It’s all true … in the Liberal Zone.

Here’s the story. Apparently Vincent C. Gray was trying to hide something when it started to come to light that William C. Smith & Co., a company the District uses and pushes large sums of tax dollars to, to get some work done around his home. When the Washington Times went snooping for answers here is how it transpired.

First, the Chairman’s office did any actual work for him:

In an interview in his city hall office Monday, Mr. Gray at first denied that the company did any work for him, aside from arranging for an architect to design a renovation that he said has yet to commence.

One would think Mr. Gray would know who was doing what right? So case closed. Well … not so fast. Later that same day …

Later in the day, a spokeswoman called back to say that the company repaired a door to the roof of Mr. Gray’s 2,800-square-foot home and installed a lock on his iron gate and exterior floodlights.

Ok … so now case closed right? Well … hold your horses there buddy! But wait! There’s more!

On Tuesday, Mr. Gray’s office said that William C. Smith & Co. supervised and received a payment of $5,051.04 for work at Mr. Gray’s home in July and August, including power-washing his driveway, painting his family room and installing wiring for a television. Mr. Gray said he paid the company an additional $5,000 for “architectural services for proposed renovation.”

Uh … ok. WTF? Is this guy that oblivious? More likely he was caught in a lie. When one is caught in a lie the story often evolves from one conversation to the next. Here we have the story evolving from a complete denial to an admission that he paid them over $10,000. Don’t know about you but if I spend $10,000 on something I don’t forget about it!

Ah but there is still more. Seems Mr. Gray didn’t even pay for these services … well until the Times went looking into it. Then *poof* payment made!

Mr. Gray confirmed that he did not pay for the work until this month — after The Washington Times began asking employees of William C. Smith & Co. about the work, and a month after the paper filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking permits on the property. He declined to show any invoices or receipts.

But there is something even more strange as noted in the final paragraph of the story.

Public records show that no work permits have been issued for Mr. Gray’s address since he bought his Southeast Washington house in the 1980s.

Ok, painting rooms and powerwashing a driveway usually do not require permits. But electrical wiring? Depends on how much work was done. Usually some guy in his own house running another line to a new outlet doesn’t require such, but if this contractor did significant work beyond that then a permit probably would have been required.

Hey, I don’t know. All I know is that another elitist bastard has been apparently caught in a lie and not paying for services until the heat was on.
