I was once young too…
Carolyn Hileman

They call us old, out of touch, out of the main stream, they pick apart our Bible in which they attempt to trick us, they ignore our constitution as if it was some old note rolled up inside a bottle found on a beach somewhere, we are behind the times, holding on to old traditions and beliefs that do not coalesce with the direction our youth wishes to take us. That is the rhetoric they have spewed for years now, trying to convince Mom and Pop sitting in front of their TV that their ways, their beliefs are somehow outdated, not the norm, they are the only ones who believe that stuff anymore, it might have worked too, but you see there is something I always tell my kids just before I am about to bust them for something, I was once young too.

You see these people who they have been talking to nightly on TV, on the news were once the youth of America and they too thought that their parents were old fuddy duddies so they know exactly what they are doing and when it come right down to it they will rely on what their parents taught them about life, love and right and wrong. Take for instance the last election how much money and time was spent trying to convince Maine that their views on marriage was arcane, how much time was spent in New Jersey trying to convince them that even though the president who was elected to enact change, they should stick with tried and true. I won’t even discuss Virginia since I don’t want to rub it in.

Each and every time the marriage amendment vote comes up the people vote for traditional marriage, thirty one times they have tried to convince people their ways were old and worn out and thirty one times they were told that is OK we prefer old and worn out, it is comfortable, it has been our way for years and no young kid is going to change that. Don’t go knocking comfortable, it is a wonderful place to be, a place where you know who you are, what you want and how to get it. Comfortable comes from being grounded, of knowing what it is you believe in, not what someone else tells you that you should believe in. It comes from reading that out dated old Bible, saluting that rain worn flag, reading the history of our country, admiring the sacrifices that have brought us to where we are right now. It is knowing what is in the constitution, reading the bill of rights and teaching it to our children.

The bad thing for those who would turn our country upside down and destroy what we have carved out for ourselves is that not all the youth is behind them, sorry for them but they have been watching and they know that a lot of what they are saying does not fit with what their parents taught them and when it comes to deciding who is right, they chose their parents. You see they know that their parents could have chosen not to have them, but they didn’t, they chose not only to have them but to raise them, they fed them, they clothed them, they taught them values, they read them the Bible and they took them to church, they know who it is that truly cares for them and they know it is not the government or some group. For those of you who believe that everyone is so easily duped by TV and the news, that they cannot think for themselves, you never had a parent like I did who said I was once young too…
