California Dreamin’
Gene Lalor | November 22, 2009
John and Michelle Phillips wrote “California Dreamin’ ” in the middle of one night in New York when presumably all the leaves were brown and the skies were grey and Mackenzie was still too young for that papa to hit on.
I have no clue as to what the Phillpses had been smoking but their dream centered on the almost ineffable joys of warm California versus the more normal but sometimes inclement climate of New York.
It was a dream similar to Oprah’s as she prepares to abandon frigid Chicago for the balmy clime of her mansion in Montecito.
Some people just don’t appreciate their environs as much as the Mamas, the Papas, and Oprah.
Cases in point are future mamas and papas assiduously studying in the excellent and very reasonably-priced California university system. They have been advised they will face a 32% tuition increase next year and they’re livid.
The students reacted as if they had been told that free condoms would no longer be available at the student center or that free treatment for STD’s would be denied them.
As UCLA grad student Sonja Diaz said of the tuition hikes, ”We are bailing out the banks, we are bailing out Wall Street. Where is the bailout for public education?”
A less educated and presumably less-mature U.C. Irvine freshman economics major, Sara Bana, employed a more apocalyptic warning to the world, “You are jeopardizing California’s future:” http://bit.ly/tnp8U
Give me a break, girls!
Even with a 32% tuition increase, you will still be paying far less for a top-notch education than most other university students in the country! And most of you will be getting that education in the mostly balmy Golden State whereas your student brethren suffer in such places as Green Bay and Otsego and Buffalo.
So, suck it up, kids. Get that second job if you must, or take a year off and bank some money for school, or get federal and state student loans if you’re poor enough, and if you’re not, claim that you’re a minority and get bunches of freebies.
Anything is better than to reduce yourselves to bloodsuckers who want to live off and get educated by hard-working tax-paying schlubs who probably never had the advantages you enjoy.
Times are tough, kids.
Instead of staging protest demonstrations, why not consider that people are hurting all over? Why not just sit down, maybe open a book, take a toke, and appreciate the chief blessing in your lives, living in America?
Could this story be related? It would explain a great deal about college student thinking: http://bit.ly/1HZgJS
Forget California dreaming. The real world has arrived.
