What Do We Do About Israel? Part II

Gene Lalor | October 19, 2009

The signs have been frequent and definitive: The Obama administration is no Bush administration when it comes to American-Israeli relations or, for that matter, the survival of the Jewish state of Israel.

Despite assurances by Obama that he would stand by Israel, many Jews who stood by their liberal man last November 4th are coming to realize his promises represented a bait and switch game, as prominent attorney Alan Dershowitz put it.

Still vainly attempting to find some positive affirmations in Obama’s public positions since the election, Dershowitz concludes his essay, “Has Obama Turned on Israel,” with the understatement that, “There may be coming changes in the Obama administration’s policies that do weaken the security of the Jewish state:” http://bit.ly/103KNc.

Alan, you ain’t seen nothing yet!  The “settlements” issue may come to seem an irrelevancy compared to what lies ahead.

A Jewish news service even sees dangers for Israel in the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded Obama since it could lead to a reticence in opposing the most imminent threat against Israel, Iranian nuclear ambitions: http://bit.ly/2nfJUs.

But what do Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian lands or the Iranian threat to Israel mean to us in the long term?

Precious little.

The simplest solution to determine what Americans truly feel about Israel and how far they are prepared to go to risk a major war between the United States and the Muslim world, including possible enormous casualties and a probable, crippling oil embargo, is to ask the American people what they think.

However, that unorthodox, simplest route toward gauging the public pulse on the matter could never happen in our alleged democratic republic.

Since in the past Washington would never allow that question to come to a vote this must all be considered hypothetical but, if there ever were a national referendum on the question of where Americans stand re: Israel, I believe Israel would go down in flaming defeat.

Wording is everything in polls and referenda.

If the question read, “Would you as an American agree to go to war against the 1.4 billion Muslims in the world and risk national annihilation to defend Israel,” I’m guessing most of us would say, “Screw that!”

However, should the measure read, “Would you as an American support and defend a faithful ally against enemy attacks at the risk of war?” for most of us the probable response would be an emphatic, “Yes!”

Regrettably, the Jewish state has, with extreme arrogance, never demonstrated a desire to be seen as a friend or ally.  Why should they when they have long known that America’s deep pockets are in Israel’s back pocket?

Again, in the past, since the Israeli lobby dictated which American MidEast buttons to be pushed, we were never able to opt for the USA over Israel, reason being that lobby knew Israel would lose, big time.

All of the above will be interpreted by some elements as vicious anti-Semitism.  Those elements see any criticism of America’s mindless commitment to Israel as anti-Semitic and fail to distinguish between national commitment and national suicide.

As a proud Catholic Irish-American, should the United States ever hypothetically go to war against Ireland or the Vatican, I would fully support the eradication of Dublin and the Vatican.

Ask any Jew whether he or she would take the same stance against Israel and Tel Aviv, i.e., support the United States in a hypothetical war against Israel.  Their responses, if honest, would be enlightening as well as a wake-up call to non-Jewish Americans.

I’m not yet prepared to refer to nation of Israel as a foe but I am posing this hypothetical to all our Jewish brethren:  Essentially, in any pinch that boiled down to choosing America over any foreign power, including Israel, over the interests of the United States, where would Jewish-Americans stand?

If there is no response or if it’s a pro-Israel response, the case is closed: They should re-locate and leave America to those of us who love and cherish our country above all others.

I suggest the future is beckoning America to make a fateful decision.  Do we  continue to support and defend a nation which has proven itself to be a self-serving leech or do we cut the ties and let Israel sink or swim?

That call was already made, by the Israelis, that we would defend them to the death, more likely America’s death than Israel’s.  However, Islamic-friendly Obama has thrown a major wrench into that scenario.

Now the question truly is on the governmental level, What do we do about Israel?

My guess is that the Obamians will summarily and eventually ditch this pseudo-ally, accompanied by a slew of denials and contentions that Israel was totally intransigent–which it probably will be.

I have no truck with the nation of Israel but I still think we are better off with Israel in our camp despite its national self-absorption and lack of concern for the welfare of the United States, except as we furnish the dollars converted to shekels with which Israel arms and defends itself.

Deeply-flawed Israel is a far superior pseudo-ally than any Islamic affiliation.

Should Jews ever wake up and smell the reality that America is the only nation on the planet that still cares about its continued existence and, with that understanding in mind, becomes a true ally, what we should do about Israel is continue to defend that nation.

The alternative is to support Islam and fanatical Muslims, the same people who murdered thousands on 9/11/2001 and who are as resolved to eradicate America’s presence on the globe as they are to pushing Israel into the Mediterranean Sea.

I trust Israel will never force us to make a “Sophie’s Choice” between its nation and Islam.  The consequences would be very ugly for all parties involved.
