Va. papers make picks in governor’s race

RICHMOND — As the gubernatorial election nears the home stretch, a slew of Virginia newspapers have endorsed candidates. On Sunday, Democrat R. Creigh Deeds picked up the endorsements of the Roanoke Times and the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot. His opponent, Republican Bob McDonnell, won endorsements from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Bristol Herald Courier, the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star and the Culpeper Star-Exponent. The Washington Times on Wednesday endorsed Mr. McDonnell. The Nov. 3 election, one of two gubernatorial races in the United States this year, is being watched for possible national political implications.
