Swine Flu and Swine: Government-Induced Panic

Gene Lalor | August 19, 2009

In academia, it’s called “publish or perish,” unwritten, university-imposed requisites that untenured professors publish something, virtually anything, to get the university name some publicity, and for the professors to avoid being canned.

It results in profs rushing into print some of the most godawful tripe no matter its relevance, no matter its accuracy.

Our present government, which revels in panic of all sorts, engages in similar ploys to arouse needless public “agina” over the economy, health care, and the environment hoping voters will agree on quick legislative action in lieu of enacting intelligent laws.

Get it done, “publish” it, before the electorate catches on and ousts the enactors in the next election.

The tactic was working until Obamacare hit the fan.

Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC, got into the panic act with its dire warnings and predictions on the Swine Flu, officially known as H1N1.

A governmental agency under the Department of Health and Human Services, the CDC and its dedicated people won’t exactly perish if they don’t publish claptrap.

They’re protected under Civil Service laws and, much like meteorologists forecasting the weather, they’re aware that when their claptrap is proven woefully wrong, the average joe will have forgotten what they said.

Besides, panics afford them some limelight and may help their climb up the promotional ladder.

The CDC latched onto the Swine Flu, H1N1, in 2008 as if it represented the onset of a pandemic worse than the bubonic plague melded into the Black Plague.

Far worse than contracting H1N1 could be the vaccinations the CDC is now advocating.  Some sources are alleging it is as ineffective as it is deadly: http://euro-med.dk/?p=9152

The World Health Organizaton, aptly acronymed WHO and the international equivalent of our CDC, has already declared the H1N1 virus a global-wide pandemic.

The recommended inoculation with the Swine Flu vaccine will probably become compulsory come fall when flu incidents always spike.  That may happen despite the vaccine’s links with autism and death.

A true cynic would also wonder as to the veracity of some charges that Baxter Labs, which benefitted mightily from government contracts, actually manufactured the Swine Flu virus for profit:  http://bit.ly/AyfKhThey’re the same folks who gave us the Gulf War Syndrome vaccine laced with anthrax.

I regret to inform the CDC and WHO of two realities.

First, a cure that’s worse than the disease isn’t much of a cure.

Second, H1N1 isn’t even in the ballpark when it comes to pandemics, if it should be termed a pandemic at all.  It’s far more akin to your everyday, every-year flu.

Like the poor, influenza attacks and resulting fatalities will always be with us and always have been.   Hand-wringing and bewailing the state of the nation’s health won’t do a damned thing to change that unfortunate fact of life.

Two weeks ago, CNN reported that, worldwide, more than 1100 people have succumbed to the Swine Flu, as if that statistic really meant something: http://bit.ly/2pKcy

What neither CNN nor the CDC have reported is that 1100 fatalities due to influenza is a paltry figure compared to historical numbers.

According to the American Journal of Epidemiology, annual deaths due to influenza totalled 41,400 in the United States alone in the years 1979-2001: http://bit.ly/z1Qg6.

For a better perspective, the 1957 Asian pandemic resulted in 70,000 American deaths, the Asiatic (Russian) flu claimed a million victims in the nineteenth century, the Spanish flu of 1918-1920 up to 100 million, and the Black Death wiped out 30-60% of Europe in the 14th century.

The point of all this is not to minimize the seriousness of any outbreak of disease but to remind the CDC of Aesop’s fable about the boy who cried wolf when there was no wolf.

If the swine at the CDC continue to cry “Panic!” over the non-existent Swine Flu pandemic, when a true health emergency arrives, Americans may not believe you!

And, to the swine in the Obama administration, when a true crisis strikes people just may recall your lies about Obamacare and reject your warnings.  Then, what will you do?

More importantly, what will we Americans do?
