Senate confirms Sotomayor

Breaking another color barrier, Sonia Sotomayor won overwhelming Senate approval Thursday to become the first Hispanic and third woman justice on the Supreme Court. “With this historic vote, the Senate has affirmed that Judge Sotomayor has the intellect, the temperament, the history, the integrity and the independence of mind to ably serve on our nation’s highest court,” said President Obama, who said the vote moves the country close to “a perfect union.” Once she is officially sworn in Judge Sotomayor, who is of Puerto Rican descent, will replace retiring Justice David Souter, though she is unlikely to alter radically the …
