Most people, when they think of the USO, picture such celebrities as Bob Hope entertaining the troops in Vietnam, or Stephen Colbert visiting with the soldiers in Iraq.
The USO is much more than that.
They have 130 service facilities around the world providing support to over 5 million service members and their families every year.
Although they are not part of the U.S. Government, they are chartered by Congress as a nonprofit, charitable organization that has been serving the needs of America’s military members and their families for over 67 years.
Just a few of the services that the USO provides to America’s Armed Forces and their dependents are:
Operation Phone Home
This program provides deployed troops with prepaid international phone cards free of charge, as a means of keeping in touch with family members back home.
United Through Reading
Perhaps one of the most heart-touching programs the USO offers, service men and women can visit one of 60 locations and read a book aloud while being recorded on DVD.
The book, DVD and instructions are then mailed to the children of the service member, who can then experience the sensation of imagining that Mommy or Daddy is sitting right there in the living room reading to them!
Operation Mail Call
This program allows troops to access an Internet based selection of over 3,000 high-quality greeting cards, select the ones they want, and have the card along with a personalized message sent to loved ones back home.
Get Your Free Flag when you Support Our Troops Today!
The USO provides the troops with Care packages, helps service members and their family members adjust to new surroundings and prepare for deployments, USO volunteers visit airports to greet America’s heroes returning from overseas, and a myriad of other services to numerous to mention here.
Salvaterra and I are proud to be a part of the USO’s support of America’s military, and we urge you to get involved.
There are numerous ways you can help.
