United States Senate
Washington, DC 20515
Dear Senator (last name) ,
I am contacting you regarding HR 2159, as I am sure you are aware this bill as of Jun 12, 2009: was Referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. if this bill is passed people who are against abortion will be refused the sale of a firearm, people who have been to war, have fought valiantly for their country will be refused the sale of a firearm, people who have ever preached or taught about the end of times will be denied the sale of a firearm, people who have rallied against illegal immigration will be denied a firearm, people who have emailed their congress or senate will be denied a firearm, people who attend the tea parties will be denied the sale of a firearm. Do you really think real terrorists come here and go to the local gun store and go through all the crap we have to go through to get a gun and give me a break they don’t do waiting periods .surely they would not, target law abiding citizens, citizens exercising their rights to freedom of speech and freedom to assemble why that would be unconstitutional, as this bill as written in a whole is also unconstitutional as it is in direct defiance of our second amendment right to keep and bear arms.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. This could not be more clearly stated, it does not bear any notations to it stating that congress has any right to control, manipulate or otherwise impugn this right, it also does not state that any state has the right to any of that either it says simply the right shall not be infringed and HR 2159 does just that, the very fact that law abiding citizens may be denied their right to bear arms because some one suspects they might be a terrorist is a blatant, mistrust on behalf of our government and a cause of distrust of the current government body as a whole. I as a citizen of this great country implore you to stop the passage of this bill and any other like it as it will only cause a back up of our court system as I can assure you the citizens will not take kindly to their rights being violated in such a matter. There have been many arguments made as to what this amendment means, kind of a guessing game as such as the courts have tried to argue that the only reason that part is in there is that common people were expected at times to be civilian military, however in reading the constitution and the bill of rights you will find that at no time are they vague about their wishes or their amendments and as such one should take their words at face value I would think.
No freeman shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
—Thomas Jefferson: Draft Virginia Constitution, 1776.
the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation…(where) the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.
—James Madison,The Federalist Papers, No. 46.
Sam Adams, Father of the American Revolution:
“The Constitution should never be construed to prevent the people of the United States…from keeping their own arms.”
Thomas Jefferson:”And what country can preserve it’s liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms.”
George Washington:
“A free people ought to be armed.”
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” — Thomas Jefferson Papers (C.J. Boyd, Ed. 1950)
“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” -Thomas Jefferson, quoting Cesare Beccaria.
Now with the voices of my Forefathers and those of like mind I declare HR 2159 to be against the original intent of our founding fathers and the constitution, the bill of rights and all that is good and decent in our land and formally request that you stand with your fellow citizens against this attack on our rights and dispose of this treasonous bill post haste.
Sincerely,
