Residents In Known Pennsylvania Flood Plain Whine About No Assistance From FEMA

J.J. Jackson | July 22, 2009

Nearly a month ago, Turtle Creek Pennsylvania got flooded. Why were there floods in Turtle Creek? Because Turtle Creek is in a flood plain. Duh! Flood plain equals flooding.

It is not like Turtle Creek being in a flood plain is some big government secret where if you mention it even in hushed tones the black helicopters swoop in and snatch not just you but your whole family to be secreted away to some government facility for troublemakers either. Everyone in Pittsburgh knows that if you live in Turtle Creek you will likely get flooded. Yet people continue to live there and operate businesses there and act all surprised when floods happen.

Monday FEMA declined support for the area. Which it should have for a couple of reasons. First, it is a known flood plain and whatever your excuse is for living there you know that going in and accept that risk. Otherwise you would move. Government should not be there to bail you out after you do something boneheaded like this. Second, well, like I said government should not be bailing you out for doing stupid things and nowhere is it found in the federal government’s charter to tackle such tasks anyway. I know that they created FEMA and have in the past done it (think New Orleans) but that does not make it right.

Of course yesterday the local news was filled with the inevitable whining from Turtle Creek residents living in the well known flood plain that they are disappointed that Uncle Barack would not save them from themselves. We also got a lot of the typical excuse making including how many of the people in Turtle Creek were poor and old and could not afford to move or otherwise take personal responsibility for themselves.

But all that doesn’t wash with anyone that lets their brain function at a reasonable level. Being poor, for example, does not save you from scorn because there are plenty of places where there is inexpensive housing NOT in flood plains around Pittsburgh. Penn Hills, where I live in a very modest cape cod, is a prime example of this. Lots of homes high on hills here and many under $60,000. Heck, some of the recent prices are even much lower as people who could not afford their homes have moved out.

Governor Fast Eddie and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato (both on the left side of moderate) are not going to take no for an answer however so don’t you worry your poor little hearts about it kiddies. They’ll try their darn best to bail you out and save you from yourselves while sopping the rest of us responsible folks with the bill.

Now I am not against these folks getting help. There are plenty of charities and charitable individuals who can be pleaded with for help in this matter. But to do such would require the residents of Turtle Creek to explain how, in another couple years, they will not come back begging for more after another such incident and them still not taking corrective action. People’s charity does have limits. Apparently so too does the government’s based on what has happened. Who’d a thunk it?

The EVIL conservative has spoken.
