Paving the Rocky Road to Armageddon
Gene Lalor | July 13, 2009
Hiroshima, Mon Amour was a tame film compared to Armageddon, Mon Amour which hasn’t been filmed as yet and probably never will be.
Armageddon,
a truly stupid 1998 film featuring Bruce Willis, unfortunately was filmed and featured an asteroid hurtling our way which Bruce re-directs with a nuke. One trouble is that Armageddon the movie sucked as a film, despite Willis. Another is that it had no relevance to Armageddon.
It seems someone is always fretting that the end is near, that the Messiah will make His Second Coming to confront and destroy evil incarnate, the Anti-Christ
The precise time is uncertain for that Final Battle but the location has been pinpointed: The Battle of Armageddon is set for Megiddo, a little lump of a place, a hill situated near an Israeli kibbutz, a tiny spot on the globe that just happens to have monumental biblical and modern relevance as foretold in the Book of Revelations.
Revelations didn’t schedule a date. The paving of the rocky road to the Apocalypse may be in process, however. Practically speaking, any future generations could refer to it as World War III.
Many believe the Armageddon is imminent, a belief that tends to gain more credence and adherents at epochal moments in history, such as the years 1000 A.D. and 2000 A.D., and during stressful times such as ours.
Just as the First World War was precipitated by a single event in Sarajevo, the fear today is that the actions of one or both of the planet’s chief lunatics will lead to Armageddon.
Those two crazies in our midst, the pot-bellied North Korean fruitcake, Kim Jong-il, and the ascetic-looking Iranian nutcase, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, are the most unlikely characters on the world stage to be able to change history except for one distinction: Both are on the verge of nuclear and nuclear-delivery capabilities.
As always, the ever-watchful and ever-impotent United Nations is on the case, wringing its collective, angst-ridden hands and issuing resolution after resolution warning North Korea and Iran not to continue on their respective nuclear courses.
U.N. resolutions are customarily followed by studied inaction during which the delegates settle back and retreat into their comfortable cocoons.
Resolutions are the U.N.’s method of making itself appear useful and its modus operandi for absolving itself of responsibility in the face of potential world dangers should they erupt into full-scale, catastrophic disasters.
Well, we tried, the United Nations can always say even when those attempts have the practical utility of teats on bulls or wings stapled on pigs.
The blustering, self-indulgent despot, Kim Jong-il, represents no Earth-altering geo-political threat, which is not to minimize his insanity and inanity.
He could unilaterally bring about massive devastation in a relatively concentrated area of the planet and the probable retaliation would effectively return his nation to the Bronze Age. That status wouldn’t change much in the daily lives of most North Korean survivors.
On the other hand, Ahmadinejad has the capacity to wreak unspeakable horrors, including beginning that battle in Megiddo, something the maniacal tyrant devoutly wishes.
For a transcript of a lengthy panel discussion featuring various Islamic scholars on Ahmadinejad’s vision and the vision of the true leaders in Iran, the mullahs, on the Apocalypse see http://www.frontpagemagazine.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=2766.
In a layman’s nutshell, according to one of those scholars, the mostly Shi’a Muslims of Iran hold firm to the belief that “destroying the world might be the prerequisite for making it ‘right’ .” That’s a pretty heavy nutshell and, if true, what better and faster way to accomplish that end than launching first strike nuclear attacks on Israel?
If successful, Israel would no longer resemble Israel as it is today. A few million former Israelis would be scattered thoughout the devastated land, its principal cities reduced to molten rubble, its government virtually non-existent.
As far as Ahmadinejad’s expressed aim to eradicate the state of Israel, at that point his goal will have been achieved, even if he did not push the small Jewish state into the Meditteranean Sea.
It’s the scenario that could unfold following those attacks that would bring about Armageddon.
The United Nations, where few members looked kindly on Israel anyway, would meet in Special Session. It would condemn Iran in no uncertain terms, an action which would have little if any practical effect since Iran will have already suffered perhaps fatal retaliatory attacks by an Israel in disarray.
Undismayed by its ineptitude, the U.N. Security Council would pass a resolution or two and organize a fact-finding mission to the region to find facts from a safe distance. Then the delegates would sit on their hands in anticipation of an American reaction which they would criticize.
At that point the final paving of the Road to Armageddon would move forward in earnest.
As the European Union dithered and bemoaned the sad condition of the planet, the United States, as usual, would be expected to make the world safe for Europeans.
We would be pressured by American Jews to exact vengeance on their behalf. That would put in motion a series of events and pose a series of questions which will determine the future.
. Whom should be the target of that revenge? A possibly-crippled Iran? The primary financial and philosophical source of Islamic terrorism, Saudi Arabia?
. Would worldwide Muslim fanatics seize the opportunity of the chaos to stage coup d’etats throughout the Islamic world, mobilize the 1.2 billion Muslims to effect their own revenge for everything from the Crusades to more recent sins of the West?
. Would America with its empathic, Muslim-connected president, decide to not decide to do anything precipitous and wait until the molten dust settled and then seek his favored “common ground” with Islam?
. Would his indecisiveness suggest weakness to an enemy already inspired by Allah to activate its worldwide network of sleeper cells in every non-Muslim nation and instruct them to commence worldwide terrorist attacks?
. Would those attacks in Germany, Holland, England, and France result in ill-conceived retaliations against their formidable Muslim populations?
. Would America sit idly by after we sustain numerous 9/11-style devastations at the hands of our own resident Muslims and their fellow travellers or would we blindly strike back at the ultimate roots in Riyadh and elsewhere?
. Would the end-result of all of the above be the true war to end all wars, World War III, pitting Islam against the West?
Those are not apocalyptic questions. The answers, however, could be very apocalyptic and it could all end at Megiddo when the Road to Armageddon is fully paved and the Final Battle begins and ends.
Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand may never have suspected he would be the first victim of World War I. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would be ecstatic to go to his grave thinking he began World War III, aka Armageddon.
