Obama Justice Department Allows Black Panthers To Escape
Carl Andrews | July 31, 2009
Escape justice that is.
In the most recent example of a travesty of justice to come from the White House, the No. 3 official at the Obama Justice Department, Associate Attorney General Thomas Perrelli has called a halt to a civil complaint lodged against three members of The New Black Panther Party.
These three individuals had been accused of voter intimidation at a Philadelphia polling place during last November’s election.
Two of the NBPP members named in the complaint stood outside the polls wearing all black combat style outfits, brandishing nightsticks and issuing racial threats and racial insults.
A third member directed their activities.
Such actions are a direct violation of Section 11(b)) of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits any type of threats, intimidation or coercion direted towards voters.
Yet in spite of this violation of the law, not only has the Obama Justice Department dismissed the charges against these men, they are actively stonewalling any effort to learn why the charges were dropped.
When members of Congress asked why the case was dismissed, the justice department official refused to answer claiming that the information was “priviliged.”
Representative Frank Wolf has said that he has been prevented from meeting with the lawyers who originally brought the charges against the members of the Black Panthers that were involved in these confrontations.
Rep. Frank also publicly asked “If showing a weapon, making threatening statements, and wearing paramilitary uniforms in front of polling station doors does not constitute voter intimidation, at what threshold of activity would these laws be enforceable?”
Excellent question Congressman.
Just don’t hold your breath waiting for an answer, a response to questions as to why the Obama Justice Department would drop charges against members of the Black Panthers must be outside of President Obama’s pledge of transparency in government.
