I am freedom

Written by: Carolyn Hileman

I am a name etched in a wall, I am a father and mother sitting in fold up chairs under an awning, I am the sound of taps softly playing in the wind, I am a flag draped coffin. I am the flag folded thirteen times; I am the heart and soul of freedom, the thing that stands between you and evil.

I am the forgotten servant, who toils away in silence and stands ready at its master’s beck and call. I am the dreams you carry for the future, and the fears you left behind. I am the picture on the wall that you touch each night before you go to bed. I am the thread that holds the seam of America together, I am right and I am mighty, I am just and I am courageous.

I am the little boy you tucked in at night, the guy you dated at the prom. I am the boy who bagged your groceries; I am the girl who watched your kids. I am the man who fixed your car, the woman who served your drinks; I am the kid who mowed your lawn. I am the one who stands guard nightly, the one whom battles the monsters under the bed. I am the bandage and blood soaked gauze, I am the cop, the doctor, and the nurse.

I am the same person I was when I went away, you knew me then, how can you think less of me now. How can you take the words of a stranger who does not even know my name over what you knew of me? They say circumstances change people, and in a way I guess it does because it makes people forget who you really are. I have not forgotten who I am or what my duty is, I have sworn to uphold it and that I shall do.

I do not ask your thanks, I do not need your approval; I am not here for just one but for all. I am the ghost of all who have gone before me; I am the boy in the trenches in world war two. I am the uniform they spit on; I am the brave face that walked away. I am the signs you hold in protest and the reason you may hold them. I am the countries first and last hope, the beacon that shines in the night, I am freedom.
