Cap and Trade Recap
We know everyone is angry about the results of the Cap and Trade vote that took place in the House today. We’re angry too. But just because we’re angry doesn’t mean we can’t be smart about it.
Tea Party Patriots, the main national organizing group for Tea Parties, is urging people to take to the streets tomorrow, Saturday, to protest the vote. The Houston Tea Party Society recognizes the motivation, but believes there’s a better way to express our frustration than organizing a protest with only twelve hours to prepare for it, so we will NOT be participating in the demonstrations.
Instead, we’re urging all of our members and sympathizers to begin participating in the Black Ribbon campaign. This is a simple and dramatic way to make our point and generate a lot of interest and curiosity about the way Congress is spending us into oblivion. To participate, all you have to do is purchase black ribbons, fabric, trash bags etc., and from now until the end of the Independence Day weekend, tie them to every light pole, street sign, public utility pole, car antenna that you can. Targeting areas around heavily trafficked public buildings is best. The black ribbons will spring up all over town almost overnight, and cause people to ask questions. This will have the potential to spark a hundred thousand conversations, rather than an abortive attempt at an ill-attended and ill-covered protest which reaches nobody.
Now, to highlight the Cap and Trade vote, a Tuesday demonstration of a juicy target might be in the works. We’re in discussions over that to kick off the round of tea parties in the Houston area, and we’ll keep you posted if it materializes. But until then, we urge you to participate in an easy, inexpensive way by joining us in the Black Ribbon campaign. Everyone can spend a few moments tying ribbon to fixtures in this town, and it has potential to reach many people.
On the www.houstontps.org website, I issued a call to arms this evening. I’m suiting up for battle. You should be too. Let’s just make sure we fight a smart campaign.

A note from Josh –
We just cannot logistically pull off a big protest in less than 12 hours… We have to get permits and coordinate with police and publicize it first off. The Pelosi protest took 2 weeks of planning with radio publicity and coordination with other groups, groups which already have plans for tomorrow already. It’s not worth doing in a city of millions to call a protest and have 2 families and a 3 other lone people show up. I just makes us look weak…
We do admit we could have fought this better. We need to find better ways of getting information out to coordinate calling, as well as have plans for protests going BEFORE the vote is taken on the next big one. We’re reviewing how this went and will need to find better and faster ways to mobilize people. This mailing list usually ends up in people’s junk mail and we’re not at that level of structure yet. As well as we are quite buried and distracted getting ready for the event on the fourth. We’ve had no lives since this started in February and our nerves are completely shot already from trying to get what we could done about Cap and Trade. I’m not sleeping tonight dealing with this…
We’re still a young organization, and we learned a lot from this, and will have to move forward in finding bettwer ways to do this. We WILL be doing something to demonstrate our disgust of this bill, but we’re only human and it won’t be tomorrow, we are not at all happy that Tea Party Patriots called this above our heads. We’re going to war, but not in ways that don’t help.
Please DO get out and be activists this weekend by helping with the outreach from the Conservador Alliance and with the Iran Protests. Please participate in the Black Ribbon Campaign. Also help with Publicizing the 3rd rally! The biggest things needed now is to grow our numbers!
