Sonia Sotomayor’s Irrelevance

Gene Lalor | June 1, 2009

Excellent cases can be made both for confirmation of Appeals Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court and for filibustering her into submission and ultimate withdrawal such as the Democrat minority did to George W. Bush’s pick for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Miguel Estrada.

It may be recalled that the eminently-qualified Estrada   was eventually beaten down because of one serious flaw in his resume’.  He was so abused that Estrada’s wife may have died shortly after as a consequence.

As with Sotomayor, he too had a compelling history and was a Hispanic nominee but unlike Sotomayor, he suffered from the terminal malady of unreconstructed conservativism and thus was totally unacceptable to fair-minded Senate liberals.

If they didn’t exactly “Bork” him, they trashed and distorted his record sufficiently to make the guy surrender in frustration.  Estrada subsequently entered private practice.

Unlike Sotomayor, Estrada had no unseemly affiliations in his background, although some would allege that Sotomayor’s associations are quite seemly, especially that with La Raza.

This is all but moot anyway since Barack Obama’s choice to fill the shoes of David Souter is a shoo-in and, as I previously argued, it would be counterproductive and a waste of effort and ammunition to go after Sotomayor.  See “Save the Ammo and Confirm Sonia,” http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=1034Hence, any discussion of Sonia Sotomayor at this point is irrelevant.

What is worth further investigation, however, is La Raza, a group of which Sotomayor is a member and which proudly published her 2001 speech.  In that lecture/speech she said in her infamously racist and stupid fashion, “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life:” http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=99420.

The National Council of la Raza, the Race, en Ingles, the NCLR, lapped it up.  NCLR sees itself as a Mexican-American civil rights group equivalent to the NAACP.  Its big tent seems to envelop all Latinos, Latinas, Hispanics, Hispanic-Americans–I never know how to refer to them since like African-Americans they keep changing their preferred title–but NCLR focuses on Mexicans and Mexican immigrants.

Hondurans such as Miguel Estrada are obviously expendable.

It concludes its “Detailed History,” which is woefully lacking in detail, by contending it is “a source of ongoing technical assistance to help coordinate and strengthen the work of . . . local groups, and for national advocacy on behalf of Mexican Americans.” (http://www.nclr.org/)

Unfortunately for Honduran immigrant, Miguel Estrada, NCLR/La Raza remained neutral on the nomination of one of its own, saying, “We can neither fairly nor accurately judge the merits of the Estrada nomination,” after citing ”unanswered questions” on his conservative values.  It rejected the contention of anti-Hispanic sentiment by Democrats and pleaded, vainly, for “civility” in the hearings.

Fat chance for civility what with the likes of Dick Durban on the scene but NCLR had to pretend to want civility, even as it watched the Dems slice, dice, and splice Estrada.  Knowing which party butters its tacos, NCLR wasn’t about to bite the hand that nourishes it with attention and tons of dineros.

Essentially, NCLR, La Raza, is an Hispanic ACORN.

More detail on its activities and enterprises is provided by HumanEvents.com, which links NCLR/La Raza with an especially militant group, MEChA, whose stated purpose is the eradication of America’s borders and “what is referred to as the ‘Reconquista’ or reconquest, of the Western U.S.”: http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=13863.

(When Mexico’s last conquest of America occurred must have slipped through history books but I’m certain Obama’s Department of Education will soon rectify that omission.)

I explore MEChA, an acronym for “The Student Movement for Aztlan” in my book, An Immodest Proposal for Ending and Winning the War on Terror.  There’s no need to buy the book; anyone can request it at a public library.  There is a definite need to understand the import of the aims of La Raza, NCLR, and MEChA.

“Their stated goal is to re-claim America’s Southwest and other areas for Mexico and to re-establish the kingdom of Aztlan, the mythical place of origin of the Aztecs, “after they emerged from the bowels of the Earth through seven caves.” (Quoted from Azteca.net. That MEChAn website indicates it is “published in Los Angeles, California USA (Aztlan).

“Incidentally, the national symbol for MEChA is a fierce eagle wielding a machete and a stick of dynamite.” (p. 132 ff)

To complacent East Coast and mid-America Americans, consciously or unintentionally oblivious of what’s in progress in our Southwest and West, I wish the best of luck and solace.

To our fellow Americans involved in a very gradual process of becoming citizens of the new Aztlan, I wish them luck and hope to resist the inevitable.

Can’t happen here?  They said the same thing in czarist Russia in 1917; most of those disbelievers were executed.  Many of us also said that America would never elect a socialist president in 2008; we did.

May God bless and save America!  First, He has to wake us up.
