Political Lessons – Republican Firing Attorneys Wrong But Democrat Firing Inspector General Just Fine
J.J. Jackson | June 18, 2009
Remember when President Bush fired United States Attorneys and the liberal Democrats went nuts? To this day they are still more upset about that than almost anything else President Bush did except act on what they said needed to be done to Saddam Hussein years before but never had the nuts to do themselves. Ok, and then there was the whole War On Terror thingy that made them nuts for anyone daring to fight back against countries that harbored terrorists and threatened the United States. Yeah, and I know they got REALLY upset over that whole robust economy that they just could not stand and the fact that he warned repeatedly about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while the Dems claimed nothing was amiss. But all in all, the whole attorney thing was firmly on that list of 1,323,541 things that really annoyed liberals about President Bush. A list, by the way, which is nearly as long as the 1,452,121 things you do that offend radical Muslims and make them want to blow themselves up in you living room.
But you know how President Bush could have avoided this problem during his presidency? Easy! All he had to do was sign and Executive Order renaming the attorneys as Inspectors General. Because apparently letting an Inspector General go is just fine. At least according to President Barack Obama who, by giving Gerald Walpin his walking papers in the manner he did, violated even the law which he co-sponsored providing for a 30-day cooling off period!
Obama also is perhaps taking a page from the Clinton playbook and slandering those that cross him by daring to investigate his political allies.
The government watchdog President Obama canned for allegedly being “confused” and “disoriented” fired back sharply Wednesday, saying the White House explanation for removing him was “insufficient,” “baseless” and “absolutely wild.”
Gerald Walpin, who until last week was the inspector general for the Corporation for National and Community Service, told FOXNews.com that part of Obama’s explanation was a “total lie” and that he feels he’s got a target on his back for political reasons.
“I am now the target of the most powerful man in this country, with an army of aides whose major responsibility today seems to be to attack me and get rid of me,” Walpin said.
Facing bipartisan criticism for the firing, Obama sought to allay congressional concerns with a letter to Senate leaders Tuesday evening explaining his decision. In the letter, White House Special Counsel Norman Eisen wrote that Walpin was “confused” and “disoriented” at a May board meeting, was “unduly disruptive,” and exhibited a “lack of candor” in providing information to decision makers.
I guess if you consider coming down on one of Obama’s buddies “unduly disruptive” this would be accurate. And now we know for future reference that firing Inspectors General for political reasons is ok.
