Phil Spector, Justice Served, Justice Denied

Gene Lalor | June 27, 2009

What do you do with a girl named Maria?  Compared to the question of what do you do with a prisoner named Phil Spector, the answer is challenging.  In Spector’s case, you give him whatever he wants!

Spector    was finally convicted of second degree murder of a defenseless woman, six years after the fact and almost two years after his first trial ended in a hung jury.  All the while the accused killer was free on a one-million-dollar bail.

Sentenced to 19 years, the 69 year old Spector is serving his time in a private cell at the medium security California State Prison at Corcoran, in the “sensitive-needs” section.

However, it seems that in addition to being sensitive, he’s an unhappy camper/inmate.  He wants some bennies, some amenities to make prison life more comfy and tolerable.

Word is he will get them: http://bit.ly/7s87R.

Anyway, it’s not as if he committed treason or a crime against society or anything like that.  He merely snuffed out the life of a woman by putting one of his various pistols in her mouth and pulling the trigger, only once though.

Granted, too, his victim, model and actress Lana Clarkson,   wasn’t the brightest crayola in the box to associate with  a guy who, according to his sons, was a pedophile, a notorious abuser of women, and a gun nut, not to mention a barber’s worst nightmare.

None of that excused his blowing the lady’s brains out and scattering her teeth all over his living room.

Is our criminal justice system so twisted that it would effectively condemn poor Phil to a life sentence without certain creature comforts?  Where is the justice? After all, he was the “mad genius” of rock and roll!  He deserves some respect.

All Phil requested of his keepers was a television, his handy-dandy iPod, and a computer so he could keep in touch via emails with his buds.  Was that too much to ask, even if he is a convicted murderer?

To deny him those little luxuries would be tantamount to cruel and unusual punishment which is forbidden under the Eighth Amendment.

Furthermore, he claimed he was innocent and that new acquaintance Ms. Clarkson came to his “castle” of her own volition, had a few drinks, then put the gun in her mouth and committed suicide.  That scenario made as much sense as his new landlord, the warden, lavishing him with all his heart desired.

Lana Clarkson is permanently dead and Phil Spector is alive and well in sunny California being treated like the musical genius that he is acclaimed to be.

It’s just too damned bad that Spector, for all his genius, didn’t claim he was part African-American and for that reason wore his hair in an Afro.  A true African-American named OJ Simpson used his race to his advantage when his jury nullified the evidence and allowed him to get away with murder.
