PA Dems Now Love Specter After Hating Him For Years
J.J. Jackson | June 17, 2009
Senator Alren Specter got scared when he saw preliminary polling that showed he did not stand a chance against Pat Toomey in the Pennsylvania Republican Primary. So he bolted to the Democrats because he saw the writing on the wall and worried that he could not out sway the more conservative Toomey. Actually, it would be more correct to say that Specter just simply returned home to the same party he left years ago for political expedience as well.
My sources tell me the promises were made to Specter that while they could not guarantee him an uncontested run in the Democratic Primary, some prominent Dems did promise Specter that his competition would be light at best. And it also appears that after years of hating Senator Snarlin’ Arlen and running opponents against him simply because he had an (R) next to his name, Democrats in the state are now miraculously in love with the man!
Rasmussen reports:
Senator Arlen Specter leads Congressman Joe Sestak by 19 percentage points in an early look at the 2010 Democratic Senatorial Primary in Pennsylvania. The first Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the race shows Specter attracting 51% of the vote while Sestak earns 32%.
Not surprisingly, Specter, a senator for nearly 30 years, is much better known than Sestak, a retired Navy admiral and second-term congressman from the Philadelphia suburbs.
Of course Republicans still despise Specter so at least they have been consistent. The only reason he ever got elected in Pennsylvania is because the Party elders of the State as well as Nationally would support him even as he screwed the party and the voters and Republicans in the State rarely had a real choice. That was, until the last election when he beat Pat Toomey by a razor thin margin because President Bush and then Senator Rick Santorum scared Republicans in the state witless that if Specter was not their candidate whoever they chose would loose. Now the GOP in the state seems to have woken up and Specter will have to win re-election with the support of those who have been trying to defeat him for years … and all because of one little letter next to his name.
